COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The Bouncing Czech is named after the town of Pizen (Pilsen) in what is now the Czech Republic. For centuries Pizen produced a beer famed for its strong hoppy taste. For a similar style we use NZ Cascade and Pacifica hops to produce a characterful pilsener with explosions of citrus. It’ll bounce round your mouth like a rabbit on a trampoline.

Mac’s hop rocker pils? Nah. No such comparison should really be made with this pils, except that they both add NZ Cascade Hops for aroma ( no ’nobel’ Bohemian Saaz hops utilised in either, as the very learned Jimthechap states) . This is an average Pilsner yes, but it is more complex in taste and aroma than a very mundane, and mass produced Mac’s beer I reckon. I can drink this pils occasionally, but it is definitely not an ’up there pilsner’ and the price quite fairly reflects that to the consumer. Cheers, and enjoy.

Purchased and consumed in Dunedin NZ on New Years Day. 330ml brown bottle BB dated 25 Oct. 2014. Not too much visible carbonation; otherwise, looks like a typical pilsner: pours golden with excellent clarity. Aroma: pleasant but rather fruity and floral for styl. Flavor: truer to style than the aroma, but the floral and fruity notes from New Zealand hops still shine through. A bt more hoppy but no more bitter than the average Czech pilsner. Appropriate malts for balance mainly appear as a limitation on bitterness. Feel: medium-light body; nice crisp carbonation. O: a bold pilsner with a distinct New Zealand note from the hops. Not quite as good as the Emersons Pilsner I had earlier today.

UPDATED: JAN 14, 2014 Unlike the name, this is much more of a German-style Pilsner than Czech, what with the strong hard water minerality and the lemon, grass and spice / pepper hop quality. Ridiculously quenching minerality with bright noble hop acids and a baked baguette and cracker-y Pilsner malt base... salivating and quenching, dry and lean but with rigid firmness to the malt giving it lip-smacking crispness. Carbonation is frothy and creamy and the malt is clean and smooth as well. Subsequent retries show it more brash, simple and watery. Meh.

330ml bottle from The Beer Cellar. Looks pretty thin in the glass, amber colour with a clean crisp white head that fades to leave a ring of white foam around the glass. Harsh flavour that is quite flat but it does foam up a bit in the mouth. Long metallic aftertaste detracts a bit from this beer.

This is not BRB’s best beer, but I disagree with the comment below that Mac’s HopRocker is a better beer than this. This Bouncing Czech has a clear, well-defined flavour. Simple, un-complex and a bit like a large-print book and a well-made pair of safety shoes. It has got a job to do (it is a Hop Delivery System) and it does it without fanfare. It’s a good, reliable dolt of a labourer; the hops make it through rain or shine. Which is more than can be said of HopRocker.

Bottled. A yellow beer with a ehite head. The aroma has notes spicy hopps, malt, and citrus fruits. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, spicy hops, and citrus fruits, leading to a bitter finish.

Looks like an archetypal pilsner but I note there’s no Saaz hops listed on the label. There is a good herbal, citrus note upon hoovering in lungfuls of aroma, so a tick in the box there. Tart bitterness and orange peel flavours, not too bad, a good summer quencher.
