3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20
Classic Flemish ’versnijbier’ with a history dating back to 1911 when it was launched by a brewery in Brugues, and apparently was already a blend of a sweet brown beer with a lambic at that time. The result is a beer much reminiscent of ’oud bruin’. Medium, yellowish off-white head, colour a dark brownish ruby. Caramelly flavour, raisin, cherries, sour berries, yoghurt; caramelly and slightly candi-ish sweetishness dominate, but the sour accent reveals a very faint hint of lambic, drying a bit in the finish. Otherwise rather boring, actually, with too thin body. Tasted this many years ago and I should rerate it, but being familiar with John Martin’s range, I am confident it has not improved since then...

On tap, yard of ale, Stroudsburg, pa. Tan head sticks to glass, aroma of a Belgian. Iced tea colour, slight carbonation. Leads with caramelized fruit notes, sourness is slight. Like a very mellowed RaisonDeTra. 5.0 abv and drinkable at a session.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Was quite a pleasant surprise. Moderate malty, some roast, caramel, light dried fruitiness, brown sugar, light hops in background. Moderate sweetness with light sourness
Drinkable, but definitely something synthetic weird about this one.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bourgogne des Flandres has a medium, cream-colored head, heavy lacing left on the glass, and an initially clear, cola-brown, bubbly appearance, which becomes quite murky, once the bottom sediment is loosened and poured in. The aroma is of sharp, aged malt, slightly turned fruit, chocolate, and sweet, gingerbread. Taste is of sweet & sour candy, sugar, turned fruit, medium-to-dark malt, acid, and brown bread crust. Some tart cherry, much like Dr. Pepper, is in evidence, too. Bitterness is low, and the mouthfeel is medium and cola-like, but without the high carbonation. Bourgogne des Flanders finishes semi-wet and decently drinkable. RJT

Small head lasting long time. Dry/red fruits aromas and caramel. No acidity aromas. Some acetic acidity flavors and quite tart. Not a long of complexity but a long sweet final.
