A - moderately bready with a touch of sour fruit. A - dark brownish red in color. No appreciable head T - very mild tartness. not nearly as sour/tart as I anticipated. P - for a brown this beer had less body than I expected. finished pretty cleanly for a sour ale O - not a bad beer just not as tart as I prefer. If you’re not looking for super tart beer this would fit the bill nicely.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter. Putrid brown liquid that pours with little head and no lacing. It just does not look appetizing. Smells more promising. Sweet caramel and a light cherry acidity. Tastes of cherries and some oak. The tartness is barely strong enough to overcome the sweetness in the middle. Not a bad flavor throughout. The failure is in the finish. The beer thins out and tastes like a sickly sugar water. Ugh. Light body. High carbonation. Just kinda unpleasant in the finish. Not something I’d drink again.

Aroma: woody notes, red fruits, cellar. Appearance: clear brown-reddish color, nice beige head. Taste: no bitterness, barrel notes, slightly astringent, semi-sweet, roasted dark malts. Palate: medium body and medium carbonation, barrel notes in the finish. Overall: Actually not so bad.

Shared 11.2 oz. bottle poured to snifters, displaying a clear, amber highlighted, brown hue, with a modest layer of off white head foam, and spots & streaks of lacing. The nose was sweet and wine-like, with ripened, dried fruit, subtle spice, and a bit of red wine vinegar tartness. Light to medium bodied, with lively carbonation, the taste added some earthy & tannic astringency, continued the pleasant fruitiness, and finished moderately tart. Decent.

Draft @ La Buena Vista, Brugge. Dark red/brown. Creamy white foam. Medium carbonation. Sweet with notes of caramel. Aroma of red berries with light sour notes. Rather sweet. Almost no bitterness. Not bad.

Classic Flemish ’versnijbier’ with a history dating back to 1911 when it was launched by a brewery in Brugues, and apparently was already a blend of a sweet brown beer with a lambic at that time. The result is a beer much reminiscent of ’oud bruin’. Medium, yellowish off-white head, colour a dark brownish ruby. Caramelly flavour, raisin, cherries, sour berries, yoghurt; caramelly and slightly candi-ish sweetishness dominate, but the sour accent reveals a very faint hint of lambic, drying a bit in the finish. Otherwise rather boring, actually, with too thin body. Tasted this many years ago and I should rerate it, but being familiar with John Martin’s range, I am confident it has not improved since then...
