3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
500 ml bottle from LCBO. Pours a very dark, slightly orangeish, brown with small tan head. Aroma is vanilla (more assertive than I might have expected) chocolate and some roastiness. Vanilla is more subtle in the flavour but gives a definite sweetness; there’s also some roasty malts, especially chocolate and a little nuttiness. Body is lighter than I might have anticipated. Nice.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Cask/handpump at JDW in Ealing. Very dark brown with a beige head and a sweetish chocolate and toffee nose. Flavour is good, drier than the aroma, smooth and chewy, with more vanilla coming through and a dryish bitter finish.

3.5 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
500 mL bottle. Dark, opaque, cola brown with just a ring of head. Appealing chocolatey aroma also has some lightly burnt firewood coffee grounds. Almost like a stout. The flavour adds some vanilla. This is almost a stout. Good body for the ABV. Nice beer.

3.6 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
500ml bottle pours a dark black ale with a puffy 3 finger tan cap that lasts well and laces the glass. Moderate carbonation. Aroma features the advertised vanilla at a tasteful understated level mingling with roasty coffee and coca tones, light earthiness and grassy hop aromas. Slick mouth feel, decent body. Flavor has the roasty-cocoa-vanilla maltiness in good balance with the hopping. Has a lovely malty presence that seems like it should be sweet but never gets there. Finish is roasty-vanilla and goes bitter but not dry.
This is a really well put together porter in the London style that has a unique non cloying character yet maintains a roasty maltiness. Very easy drinking and mellow.

3.4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Very pleasant vanilla aroma and taste over what is a very regular sessionable porter. The base beer is squeaky-clean. with soft brown malt flavors and the most cautious, but skillful accent of noble hops. Overall a tad on the thin side, but very enjoyable.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
[Gravity cask at Chippenham Beer Festival 2009] Strong sweet vanilla in the aroma and initial taste, then cough mixture comes through. Some leather, tobacco and red wine lurks in the background, with a little roasty bitterness in the finish. Very, very smooth and easy to drink, but somehow the components don’t quite hang together properly. WOuld rather like to taste the base porter without the vanilla added.
