Cask - The Market Porter, London. A clear dark golden coloured beer that poured with a white head leaving a scattered soapy lace. Sulphorous aroma with a mild pale malt sweetness, orange & some bready yeast. Malty biscuit on the tongue, some more sulphur and sweet citrus notes. Medium-ish body, soft mouthfeel & a sweet dominant finish with just a delicate pithy citrus bitterness. In good nick, despite the sulphur. A meaty quaffer with nice enough balance, if a bit on the sweeter side of things. As a side note, it would seem that I’m quite sensitive to sulphurous qualities in beer as it came across fairly strong to me yet my girlfriend didn’t pick up on it.

Cask as Christmas Box Blonde at the Victoria Station ’spoons. Hazy straw coloured with a tin white head; aroma of damp straw; the taste is grainy and sweet with a tocuh of citrus; and the finish is soft, lightly bitter and lacking definition. Overall a fuzzy, disappointing beer.

Spoons, Hinckley, spelt properly, 15/12/11. Fresh on. Clean burnished gold with a heavy white collar. Faint egg and stainless steel aroma. Something of a relief after the soggy red morass of the last beer; lemonade bitter shandy notes, grass and sherbet, green herbs. Marshmallow wafers on the finish, almond licks. Anodyne, chav-friendly. Barely better than a corn fed pale lager. Fuck this, I’m off to NYC for some proper beer.

This winter ale is nothing like a regular blonde - much darker and blander.

[500ml bottle from Whitehall Garden Centre, Lacock, Wiltshire] Golden-amber, no head, very slight fizz. Good hoppy balance of bitterness set against a resinous mouthfeel; it should be a cracking summer beer. However, the actual flavours are rather subdued - I managed to get a bit of grapefruit and that was it. Not sure what this beer has to do with Christmas, either!

Cask, handpump at The Kings Arms, Kidlington, Oxon, 11.12.10 Pours blonde in colour with a slight haze and filmy white head. There is a citrus bitterness, that leaves a furriness across the roof of the mouth. Some further citrus and sweetness show, touch of vanilla, nice hoppy, moderately bitter beer. A6 A3 T7 P3 Ov13 3.2
