A dark ale with well balanced bittering. Spicy, full bodied and flavoursome with a deep fruit aroma.

500ml bottle (William K Kurvi, Helsinki)
6 Roasted malts, a tad mashy and rich.
4 Very dark, red glints. Small tight beige head.
6 Thinner and sharper than I’d hoped for from the aroma. A very simple roasty porter, that’s all. As it warms it fills out more.
3 Watery, but easy to drink when cold. Warmer, it’s fuller. Nice coffee finish. 13 At least one of us thought it was a good beer. Whether it was Anna’s opinion, or my dictation that she wrote down, we can’t remember. I’m glad notes were taken, I don’t even remember going to the pub!

500cl bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring. Mucky, oily looking, dark brown with absolutely no head; earthy aroma of chocolate malt; dry chocolate flavour; and even drier finish. Quite thin, but with some serious malts, and quite challenging to drink.

[500ml bottle from Whitehall Garden Centre, Lacock, Wiltshire] Deep brown, no head. Unpleasant aroma of burnt plastic and salted cheese biscuits. Flavour is a bit better, a basic burnt malt, but it’s on the watery side. Finishes dry. The stench of this one completely put me off. Grim.

downender (4387) - Bristol, Gloucestershire, ENGLAND - NOV 30, 2010
Cask-conditioned at the Commercial Rooms (JDW), Bristol 30/11/10. Deep, ruddy brown with a decent, off-white head that left rings down the glass. Aroma of drinking chocolate, caramel and leafy hops. Flavour had plenty more chocolate, some bready malts, cherries and a vague spiciness, leading to a long, bitter finish. A very enjoyable winter warmer.
