May long weekend, opening up the lake with Parksy-- it’s malt likra time! I guess this is more of a pale lager, but it sure satisfies the shit-factor that I’m after in a canned lake beer. Urinal scented, tinny grainy -- another piece of shit from Minhas.

(Rating #3606)

710ml supercan poured a pale straw color with a big white head that settled quickly and left virtually no lacing. Aroma is grain. Taste is sweet corn and an undesirable hoppy bitterness. A below average lager.

24 oz. can: Slightly hazed gold with a frothy, off-white head. Lemony-sweet grain malt aroma. Ridiculously sweet flavor. Sugary, corny, grain malt, aluminum. Awful.... and OH! Look! Minhas had a hand in this....what a surprise... Just bad, bad, bad... I hope my $1.38 for this enables them to buy a helpful brewer’s guide or a can of neon spray paint to tag, "CLOSED" on the side of their building..... Sorry, that’s harsh...but damn.....their stuff is terrible.

710 MONSTER CAN from TBS, served cold in a tulip glass.

App.: Clear golden with a thin veil of white. Aroma: Mainly acetone, acetyl and ass; honestly, these are the aromas...no poetic license for the sake of alliteration, gross sweetness, cereals, grains, malt liquor-esque BLECH. Palate: Medium body and carbonation. Flav.: Mercifully, less offensive than the nose; the defects persist, tempered by Sherry (is that a good thing??), a little more grain/cereal, still plenty awful; dry with an odd, cloying bitterness and a strangely fruity, problematic finish.

Among the worst beers I’ve ever rated and a very unwelcome addition to the Ontario beer scene. For shame, TBS and Minhas.

Canette 710ml.

710 can from The Beer Store. Pours a light, bright yellow with moderate-sized white head that rapidly recedes to a little white scruff. Aroma in a word is cheap - harsh grains, sweet corn and some alcohol. Taste is equally uninspiring - sickly sweet corn, nasty grains, almost a little gasoline and a wet dog finish. Quite thin. Absolutely terrible.

Second cheap Ice beer today in cans (the other being the Keystone Ice). Pours a little more golden than the other. Head is way better as well - way more retention and some lacing everywhere. Aromas of malts, adjuncts and hints of honey. Again, better scent, but where this one goes wrong is the taste. Sweet malty mouth with some more adjuncts and then, the same club soda feel. So, a better looking beer, but the taste kind of does not sit well in the stomach. The Keystone is easier going down.

710 ml can from LCBO location #200, Argyle Mall, London, ON- Labeled as "MONSTER CAN". This newest addition to the LCBO shelves fits in nicely in the beer fridge. I think it fits perfectly between the Labatt Maximum Ice 40s and the giant cans of Steeler. And much like Steeler, this beer also has a "union made" logo on it. That naturally means a quality product, right? Sadly, it is not to be. To be honest here, I don’t mind sampling these welfare lagers. I really enjoy trying all new things, if for no other reason than to see what other people are drinking, and seeing what it tastes like. After all, I work in the industry. I should be able to engage my customers in proper service knowledge. Now on to the beer. This is a poor product. While the regular Boxer Lager wasn’t offensive, this one is on the border. Decants a very pale and transparent yellow. Looks like coors light. This beer pours an unnaturally large head.....about 6 inches of billowing bleached white froth. Just as unnatural, it dissipates to a very thin ring in about 3 seconds. This is a tell tale sign of many adjuncts. Not surprising. A simple aroma tells all. Green apple, fusel alcohol, and grass are the front runners, but there are notes of orange wet paper. In terms of flavour, it isn’t the worst pale lager I’ve had, but sheesh, this is very much like a malt liquor. Sweet grassy flavours mingle with fusel alcohol, green apple, sugary pale malts, candy. Odd. Very sweet and surprisingly hefty for a 5.5% pale lager. I’d even go as far as saying it is full bodied.Finishes oily, sugary, with a heft of booze I’d expect in an 8 or 9% malt likka. Down the drain it goes. You can thank me for taking one for the team.
