Our winter seasonal beer is a malty English Brown Ale with a twist as we use star anise, orange peel and coffee in the recipe. The complexity of this beer is superb with subtle hints of orange, licorice, caramel and coffee. Three different hop varieties are used including Simcoe, which adds a slight tangerine note to the aroma. This ale is perfect for the cold winter months and will warm you up from the inside!

On tap at Fuxing Road on 27 Feb 2015. Pours Murky brown with a white head. Aroma of malt, chocolate and orange. Sweet finish. Rating transferred from the Bourbon version which was obviously wrong.

Southpaw Winter Warmer 7.1% A dark reddish Amber so a bit light in color for a winter warmer for my tastes but it has a great dense beige head of foam that sticks around which is a big plus. The aroma is big bready malts, some gingerbread or cinnamon? Pretty nice malt-forward nose. The body is a bit scratchy with a sparkling bubbly carbonation. The taste is fudge, malty breadiness, it has an earthy edge but ends with a bitter semi-metallic finish. It seems to be made with star anise, coffee & orange peel. And having read that I do get coffee grounds, maybe a touch of licorice & some citrus. An interesting take on a beefed up English brown ale. It is pretty cool and opens up as it warms but seems a bit disjointed to me. Once it warms up the coffee really comes through in the nose, the body becomes smoother & silkier while the whole beer becomes more creamy coffee & definitely improves for that fact. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Dark caramel color. Dense foam head laces like a blanket. Slight coffee aroma. Lighter Coffee and licorice flavor with the coffee dominating. I can taste the orange peel on the finish. Pretty good.

Tap @ the brewpub in Min Hang. Pours slightly hazy dark amber with a creamy tan head. Aroma of malt, berries, fruit, caramel. Taste is malt, caramel, sweet fruity, redberries, licorice, light coffee, hints of smoke, spices. Almost full bodied, soft carbonation, shows a little varming alcohol. 070112
