3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 otakuden (1558) - Vero Beach, USA - FEB 4, 2011
Appearance: brown with ruby and garnet highlights and glints. Off-white head fades into a thin film with thick edges. Swirls produce the same.
Nose: pumpernickel and chocolate cakey cookies. Treacle, brown sugar, and red apple skins mingle. More chocolate and pumpernickel underneath. Wisp of plums and prunes with a sense of classic English stylings. Faint candied sugar presence.
Palate: soft, light, and frothy mouthfeel followed by a gentle bready sweetness upon which maraschino cherries, prunes, and dates lie. Chocolate comes in last in the back and lingers after each quaff. Treacle in the middle accents crisp red apples, skins intact, while more dark fruit decorated breads abound – pumpernickel with dates, prunes, and fresh slices of juicy ripe plums. Pumpernickel raisin bread? Apples linger on the lips. Chocolate weaves her way into the palace of flavors.
Final Thoughts: most intriguing if I do say so myself. A treat thanks to my fellow coworker Sharon, they came directly to me from England where she vacationed not too long ago. A true English brown ale.

Bottled, from Rhythm & Booze Brigg. Chestnut brown fluffy but quickly subsiding off white head and gentle condition. Aromas of fruity berries and low sweet caramel with a trace of roasted barley, gentle caramel initialy in the mouth but hop and roast bitterness creates a brief equilibrium before taking over and becoming dominant, lingering dry bitterness with hints of roast in the finish
