Boilermaker is a copper-coloured IPA brewed with Ben and Tom from Thinking Drinkers. Brewed with Chinook, Simcoe, Cascade and Willamette hops and matured with Penderyn whisky infused oak chips in casks from the distillery, the arts of distillation and brewing combine to create an epic Welsh IPA adorned with a fragrant citrus aroma, a touch of spice with hints of vanilla and a warm whisky finish.

Bottle at home. Pours clear dark amber with a little cream head, decent lacing. Aromas are caramel, oak, vanilla, whisky, toast, fleshy fruit, cane sugar. Taste is quite sweet, gentle spice, light bitter. Medium-light body. The aromas are nice, but it’s too sweet and the finish reminds me if rum barrel-aged, which just doesn’t go. Promising at first, disappointing ultimately.

33cl bottle poured into a tulip glass. Carbonated with a small head. Dark amber in colour. Caramel with a sweet roasted malt aftertaste. Not really hoppy, nor a typical IPA.... More an English (or Welsh) bitter.

Pours a rich copper. Aroma is dominated by old ale style malt and alcohol. Some dried fig esters. Mouthfeel overly dominated by carbonation at first, followed by a heavy but pleasing hop bitterness. Warming malt and alcohol come through afterwards. Calls itself an ipa but it?s not. It?s a slightly over-hopped strong old ale. Would have been more interesting to firmly straddle both camps and late /dry hop to earn that badge.

AROMA: whisky (notes), nuts, bread, APPEARANCE: amber, clear, minimal head, white foam, TASTE: medium sweetness, lightly bitter, PALATE: light body, thin feel, flat, OVERALL: whisky aromas blends in subtedly, rest of beer not very exciting, too flat and little aromas to balance with the overly sweet whisky.
