3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle from Tesco drunk at home. Dark brown almost black beer with a thin lasting beige head. Roasty chocolate and some liquorice on the aroma. Actually I rather like this. The best Brains beer I think I’ve had. A little thin in the mouth, but highly drinkable. Yes, very drinkable and not much hop or dryness on the finish. Good stout. My kind of stout.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle at home in London. Pours red-brown with a frothy, beige head. Some lacto notes in the nose and very modest roast. Lightly sweet flavor, lightly roasty, some dark sugar, faint dirt and minerals, mild cocoa. Light bodied with average carbonation. Lightly sweet to finish, slightly dry, with a bit of milk chocolate, baking cocoa, modest roasted malts, some burnt wood, light earth. Pretty bland overall, though not offensive.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Bottle from Tesco Extra, Bridgend, Wales shared with Gazza and dad consumed 01.09.1. This was labelled as Brains Original Stout Pours black with filmy off-white head. This is quite soft in the mouth, easy drinking beer, some caramel (picked out by Gazza) but there is a smooth watery milk chocolate. Its absolutely fine. We used the rest to make onion gravy I think it worked quite well. A6 A4 T7 P3 Ov13 3.3

2.9 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
UPDATED: APR 21, 2012 Dec, 2011 Bottle from Tesco. A creamy stout with chocolate notes, bitterness and some greasy butter. It’s an enjoyable dark beer, but if - like the Black - this is intended as a Guinness clone, they are wide of the mark. [2.8]
April, 2012 Bottle from Tesco. This is a very drinkable dark beer. It is soft and creamy with vanilla, freshly cut American oak, and chocolate flavours, rubbed with some tobacco bitterness in the finish. It lacks weight and import on one end, and fun on the other. It provides a perfectly acceptable drink with no real flaws to speak of, but no excitement or interest either. OK, [3.0]

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
50cl bottle of Brains Original Stout from Tescos, Hastings.
A deep chestnut black colour with a loose creamy beige head; rich coffee and chocolate
aroma; the texture is milky, but the taste is quite strongly bitter and lacking the expected sweetness;
there’s some chocolate then a long dry finish with burnt demerara sugar and a slight warming at the end.
A fine stout.

Sample at SBWF 2013.
Black with a tan head. Soft aroma of light roasted malt and light coffee. The taste was also light with notes of coffee, dark bitter chocolate and roasted malt. Rather creamy mouthfeel with some bitterness in the finish.
