Developed in 2011 exclusively for Tesco. Since 2014 has been available in other outlets.
Our ’Original Stout’ is a classic full bodied stout with a distinctive chocolate aroma. It is brewed using a combination of chocolate and premium malts and bittered with a blend of hops to create a complex flavoursome refreshing stout.

Bottle at home in London. Pours red-brown with a frothy, beige head. Some lacto notes in the nose and very modest roast. Lightly sweet flavor, lightly roasty, some dark sugar, faint dirt and minerals, mild cocoa. Light bodied with average carbonation. Lightly sweet to finish, slightly dry, with a bit of milk chocolate, baking cocoa, modest roasted malts, some burnt wood, light earth. Pretty bland overall, though not offensive.

Bottle from Tesco drunk at home. Dark brown almost black beer with a thin lasting beige head. Roasty chocolate and some liquorice on the aroma. Actually I rather like this. The best Brains beer I think I’ve had. A little thin in the mouth, but highly drinkable. Yes, very drinkable and not much hop or dryness on the finish. Good stout. My kind of stout.

Bottled, 500ml from Grimsbury Londis, Banbury, Oxon. Black with cream head. There is a roasty, malty, bitter character to this, a fuller flavour than the ABV would suggest. There is some fruitiness, however; I would pitch this closer to a mild than a stout. Reasonable though.

Bottle from Tesco Extra, Bridgend, Wales shared with Gazza and dad consumed 01.09.1. This was labelled as Brains Original Stout Pours black with filmy off-white head. This is quite soft in the mouth, easy drinking beer, some caramel (picked out by Gazza) but there is a smooth watery milk chocolate. Its absolutely fine. We used the rest to make onion gravy I think it worked quite well. A6 A4 T7 P3 Ov13 3.3

Can’t believe this one slipped under the radar- assumed it was the same as the dark. Bottle from Crosspoint Tesco, Coventry. Handsome deep ruby appearing black with a slim beige cap. Nose butter, iron and black coffee. Rusted coffee flavour; heavily toasted Schwarz-like grain, burnt paper, charcoal, puffed rice. Thin but half decent.
