First tasted this in Blackfriers, Glasgow in January 1992. Cask, handpump dispense. Clear copper red in colour with a thin creamy white head. Slight hint of caramel in the short aroma. Thin but creamy mouthfeel and good lacing. Pale malts deliver a sweet fruit note of dates, plums and tart redcurrant. Tangy metallic note in the spicy hops, giving a bitter bite to the aftertaste. Finish is well balanced with a woody sweet edge. A decent session bitter. The Welsh answer to Belhaven 80/

Pint at the Old Arcade, in Cardiff. It pours a clear deep amber liquid with small-medium white froth; good lacing. The aroma is light, but good: nuts, caramel and ripe oranges. Very mild grassy hops; there could be more. It tastes pretty good, very much like it smells, but more intense. It is moderatedly carbonated, with medium bitterness and ending semi-dry. As the locals say, it is a "moreish": it is a beer that keeps getting better as you drink it, so you’ll want more and more. This is the regular beer in Wales, and it is very much above the average in Europe! Better in cask than bottled (more intense).
