SA Gold is a full-flavoured, hoppy and refreshing golden ale, brewed at the home of the famous Brains SA in Wales. Careful use of Target hops creates a satisfying bitterness, perfectly balanced by vibrant citrus aromas and complex hop flavours from late-hopping using Cascade and Styrian Goldings. A deliciously satisfying and refreshing pint!

Bottle. Mild green apple aroma. Clear golden colour. Small head. The flavour is mildly grainy, but not unpleasant. Has a little citric note, probably from the hops.

Bottle 50 cl. Pours a clear yellow with a small white head. Fruity and lightly citrusy nose. Medium body, fruity and lightly sulphurous with a dry finish. Pleasant and easy going. 110512

Feb 2008: from BA. You’re Welsh and you know you are! Clear 500ml bottle, poured into a straight sided sleeve pint glass. Light, pale golden in colour with not much head to start with, no head after about a minute. Clear and lager like, without the bubbles rising through the body. What smell? A hint of yeast, a fart of hops? Srangely it also has a sweet aroma to it, but can’t put my mind to what it is. Oh dear, not a lot going for this beer, dry tasting and boring. The label claims it is refeshingly hoppy, well I can’t find any hoppiness at all. Target hops in the brew, late hopped with Cascade and Styrian Goldings, again according to the label. Fizzy and uninteresting, this is a nothing beer and i can’t think what the brewer is trying to do here. The normal SA is a wonderful beer, this is far from that. If this is a typical American Blonde Ale (which I doubt) I’ll not be having another one in this life.

Pours clear golden with a low head. Aroma is pretty weak, mostly malts. Flavor is malts, hop and some alcohol. Quite nice.

500ml bottle. Golden pour with white head that sticks around nicely. Pretty skunky on the nose (quite possibly helped by the clear bottle) with a hint of malt underneath. There’s also a distinct lemon Pledge note. About the same on the palate but not as skunky.

I could have sworn I had already rated this, but anyway. 500ml bottle from Waitrose served cool. Golden ale with a dense but receding white head. Floral aroma, tangy citrus flavour. Particularly good balance between malt sweetness and hop bitterness. I had the impression that there had been some careful tastings and adjustings of the recipe before unleashing it on the public. Sometimes I think brewers listen to market research too much, and respond accordingly. I’d love to think someone followed their heart and palate in this case, lovely beer.

500ml bottle. Pours a pale gold with a decent white head. Fresh and zesty, erring on the sweeter side. There’s a nice balance of bitters and there a medium dry bittersweet finish which makes this a really nice drinkable beer. Nothing magical, but satisfying and pleasant.

Bottle. Pale golden pour and the nose is lovely. Soft spicy hoppiness with a bit of orange peel. Quite leafy and a little bit herbal/spicy as well. Softly herbal and a little bit of light leathery character. Nice and spicy.

Old Rating. Bottle. Golden with a white head. A fresh, hoppy golden ale with a medium bitter finish.
