500ml bottle # 038189: BBD 31 Oct 14, some 9 days ago. Poured slowly into an Abbot Ale glass tankard on 9 Nov 14. Huge lightly tanned foaming head on top of a dull chestnut coloured body. This bottle conditioned ale has an aroma that leads with roasted maltiness, some dark fruits follow along with a raisin hint or two, but light roasted malts rule the nose. The taste is also malt first, semi-sweet and again with a fruity and dried fruit feel later in the flavouring. Good body depth which helped to hide the alcohol level nicely. I really enjoyed this brew and am annoyed I allowed the bottle to become ’out of date’ before drinking it: I must have had it on my shelves for over a year and just kept overlooking it and awaiting the right time to open it.

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Faint Sour aroma, with cherry notes. Pours ruby red with a thin white head. Very little in the way of sediment. Soft biscuit palate, with a zesty bitter finish, alcohol reasonably prominent.

Extraordinarily good beer - big on flavour.
Wonderful on the nose, like a fruit basket.
Very complex, bursting with flavour;
Melon, grapefruit, molasses, light-spices with slightly understated hop flavouring.
Drinks like a particularly good IPA. 500ml bottle.
And it’s 6.7% to boot!
Almost my new favourite beer.

Robe orangée, limpide grosse carbo, petit collet de fines bulles.
Aromes un peu faiblard, des notes sucrés, rhum.
Mousse onctueuse, mince, caramel. Amertume légère sur le final mais une longueur agréable sur les noisettes et caramel.

1.9 AROMA 1/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 8/20
Pours clear copper brown. Head reduces. Negligible aroma. Taste: sweetness, malt, alcohol. Palate: quite syrupy. Overall: Disappointing. Little hop flavour. Hops have changed since the 7.2% version, which I liked.

3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Copper colour, medium body, medium-light carbonation. Complex dried fruits, malt base with refreshing hoppiness. Well balanced, warming but not hot. Bitter hop finish to the up-front caramel. Easy drinking for a strong ale. Very pleasant.

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 9/20
Nose is short; yeast, caramel, slight lactose. Taste is brown sugar, caramel, nut, leading to a too-sweet note (banana milkshake?) in the soft cream finish. Moutfeel is good.
I can’t get past the really odd banana note in the finish, it’s very off putting.

Bottle. Dark bronze appearance with a small head. Excellent malty flavour and a full flavour. Cannot believe that I am giving this score to a beer from the Marstons empire. Very rarely I say this about a beer they produce but it is certainly worth checking out.
