COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
The quality of the cold brewed coffee that goes into Texas Exile is important to us. That’s why we hooked up with MA coffee roaster Barismo. These guys are as serious about coffee as we are about beer. About 33 gallons of cold brewed coffee goes into each batch of Texas Exile right before fermentation, adding the perfect compliment to the brown sugar and oatmeal flavors of this huge imperial porter. Breakfast just got a punch in the neck.

UPDATED: NOV 17, 2012 Comes out of the bottle a deep sable barely a flea’s eyebrow above black with a thick and rather persistent tan head. Smoky aroma has firm coffee and, interestingly, hoppy notes. Flavor has tones of hops, coffee and chocolate plus some woody hoppy hints. Smooth texture has good body and fizz, and some sass. Wherever you have it, a good one!

Flaske: Drukket i Joshua Tree Park under den mest fantastiske nattehimmel. Kulsort olieret øl med et cremet mokkafarvet skumhoved. Duften er kaffe og masser af impy og hrmpf. Smagen er kaffe, brændt med en smule alkohol. Lækker satan.

650 ml. bottle sampled @ Barley Legal Tasting Room. Procured from Hopduvel upon Benzai’s recommendation. Dark brown, beige head. Nose is huge roasted coffee beans and fresh cup of black coffee, molasses, sweet, palm sugar, liquorish. Big roasted coffee grounds, palm & exotic sugar, black coffee, roast, molasses, light hazelnut, big coffee bean sour in the back. Thick coffee mouthfeel. Thick is just alcoholic coffee as opposed to beer with coffee, interesting, I like it.

Coffee and chocolate aromas are dense. Nice thick brown foam tops the full body. Not too bitter. A very pleasant drinker.

Black beer, creamy beige to brown head, pretty stable, adhesive, leaving a nice lacing in the glass. Aroma: mocha, sugary, some chlorine, dark chocolate. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: mocha, coffee, pretty roasted, caramel, bitter touch, bit sugary, more coffee. Aftertaste: caramel, sweet touch, lots of coffee, pretty bitter, bit sourish, red fruits, sugary, hop bitter ending.

Pours a dark brown almost black with minimal head retention. Nose of coffee but with clear notes of cocoa. On the front end there is a flash of booziness but the flavor is dominated by roasted coffee beans. It finishes with a bitter note, akin to strong black coffee. Overall, I really enjoyed this beer. It’s a bit stronger than smoglifter (the other stout I had recently from the same brewery), but the strength seems more tied to the coffee notes than anything else. I wouldn’t call this a starter stout, because of the strength but for the more experienced palate, it’s definitely worth a drink.

Hop City ATL bottle (10/04/12) I’m pretty sure I only bought because it was a special. Dark brown pour that reminded me of Coke but with a milk chocolate like head. Big sweet aroma that has cocoa powder, a hint of molasses, brown sugar and some dark fruit. Espresso bitterness plus some dark malt in the flavor. Maybe a little more heat from the 10.5 ABV than expected. Good.

Pours a very dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma has a mix of coffee, chocolate and roasted malt. The flavor is more of the same but is a little bit heavier on the coffee. I also get a little bit of cream and oat notes in the flavor. Medium to thick mouthfeel and medium carbonation.
