An award-winning smoked porter. A deliciously complex dark ale with sweet roasted notes alongside coffee and liquorice.

Tasted this at the Paisley Beer Festival on the 23rd April 2015. Cask, gravity dispense. Dark mahogany in colour with a thin pale buff head which rapidly vanished. Strong note of wood smoke in the robust malty aroma. Thin oily mouthfeel and no lacing. Dark malt complex gives a moist maltloaf base with strong notes of roast grain and syrupy figs. Very slight hint of a hop prickle present in the short aftertaste but drowned out by the wood smoke flavours coming through in the malt. Finish is malty with undertones of dry liquorice, oak cask, roast malt and bournville chocolate in the mouth. A decent, complex, smoked porter but not one for a session though.

Cask, The Salmon, Leicester. Very dark brown with a firm beige head. Aromas are roast coffee with plenty of dark berries. Liquorice with nutty dark chocolate and hints of smoke. Dark treacle with bready yeast. Flavours are rich, bitter coffee with hints of grapefruit. Berry fruitiness with pithy notes. Dark chocolate with some nice funkiness. Cask at Rutland Arms, Sheffield. Just about black. Fairly thick, bubbly tan head. Chocolate. Caramel. Light, savoury smoke. Taste is dry, with a light, roast bitterness. Palate is surprising airy. Finish is long, roast bitter. Quite light on the smoke. Very decent.
