Wow, a smoked beer that actually tastes Smokey! Full of bonfire hints, would be great with food.

Cask at Rutland Arms, Sheffield. Just about black. Fairly thick, bubbly tan head. Chocolate. Caramel. Light, savoury smoke. Taste is dry, with a light, roast bitterness. Palate is surprising airy. Finish is long, roast bitter. Quite light on the smoke. Very decent.

Cask at Maidenhead beer festival 2014. A black coloured pour with virtually no head to speak of. Smokey, malty aroma. Tastes smokey, malty, slightly roasty with a hint of coffee in there too.

Cask half-pint at the 2014 Lincoln Beer Festival. Poured a good dark colour with a beige head that stayed. Smoky malts rule the brew in all aspects, deep routed earthiness ooze out of the beer which is neither sweet or dry, but just right. Impressed. I don’t usually go for ’smoked’ beers but this was fine and I’m pleased I tried it.

6% abv version tried at the CAMRA Lincoln beer festival 2014. Not a full rating as drunk as part of a whole day session.

Cask conditioned handpump Brewery Tap Leeds 14/04/14. A black beer with a tan head and lace. Good smoked malts in the nose. Smoky in the mouth too with a cold chocolate stouty note which needs more roast. It’s more like smoked bock than a smoked porter. Not as good as I’d hoped having drank Bad Kitty.

Bottle from Trembling Madness, York. This is a very dark brown-black beer with red ruby highlights. It pours without any discernible head and has chocolate and liquorice flavours followed by smokey roasted notes and bitter red fruit and more dark chocolate on the finish.

Cask at The Phoenix, York, September 2013. Black, opaque with beige head. roast, a little peaty, but everything’s faint. Dry, smoky wooden taste. Full bodied, smooth texture, slightly smoky finish.

Cask conditioned at The Brigantes Bar, York. Black with cream head. This started out quite sweet and fruity, but then a light bonfire note came through, a soggy smokiness that was quite pleasant. There is a roasty fruitiness late on. Decent.

Small yellowish beige head. Opaque black body. Roasty earthy sooty aroma with oily roasted rice notes. Dry, and faintly acidic, burnt smoked taste with sooty roasty notes. Mid-to-thin body. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dryish earthy soothy aftertaste with burnt smoky notes. It’s OK, but feels like it’s slightly infected. (0.5l bottle, from House of Trembling Madness, York.)
