Small beige head doesn’t last. Clear brown body. Faint fruity aroma. Dry-sweetish wooden roasted sugar taste with herbal notes. Mid-bodied. Mild, soft mouthfeel. Dry roasty sugar and wood aftertaste with caramelly grassy cinnamon notes. Decent, but a bit bland and a bit odd. (0.33l bottle, CitySuper IFC, Hong Kong.)

Pours into a chalice as a gigantic foam bomb, even when chilled. Light aroma of malts, hay, alcohol. Taste is a mix of tin and malt with some other vegetable spices thrown in - maybe ginger or coriander. Unique taste closer to a saison.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 KyotoLefty (3752) - Kyoto, JAPAN - JAN 4, 2009
4 malts: barley, red, smoked, and sassafras. Said to be a typical 18th century style beer from Lorraine.
Dark amber to a very reddish brown. Little head that quickly vanishes, leaving lace. Slightly cloudy. Great appearance. Very appealing, malty aroma, reasonably smoky. Pretty dry. A touch of caramel. Sour flavor predominates. Some caramel in the beginning, then citrus taking over through the end, and smoke throughout. Very interesting, though I am not sure how well this mixture works. You just get a bit of a taste of the sassafras back there. Finish is rather dry, smoky, roasted, some hops, maybe, and a touch of acid. Not very sweet, but the acid touch stands out in there.
A fascinating beer. I like it, but don’t think I could drink too much of it. It is complex, although you might also say “weird.” It should be a touch less sour, though.

Thanks for this one JoeMcPhee. Amber in colour with a decent frothy head. The bottle was pretty fizzed up so lost alot of it on my coffee table but saved enought to sample. High carbonation. Thin subtle hints of fruit and spices. A little metallic in parts.
