Vin d’orge

In his historical novel The Trumpet Major, British author Thomas Hardy (1840-1928) provided a rather enticing deScription of a syrupy, malty, extra strong beer: barley wine. Our version is inspired by the pure English tradition of this style. The generous use of hops lends a solid bitterness when young that mellows with age as it protects the beer from the ravages of time. Ale de Hardy presents strong malted barley flavors accented by notes of caramel, dried fruit and a warming sensation from the higher alcohol content. Over time notes of port wine, black cherry and maple taffy may emerge.

Bottle, 341mL. Home. A beautiful sparkling amber beer with brown hues ; medium white head with a medium retention. Caramel, fruits (prune, raisin, fig), alcohol, herb, light spice. Medium sweet, round, warming, light bitter. Full body, average oily texture, average to soft carbonation, sweet warming finish, spicy dry note. Overall, I’m happy... solid barleywine ; fruity, light warming, good body.

My Bottom Line:
Zealous coriander seeds take over this Spiced Barley Wine, as candied fruitiness and bitter hops whip up a more traditional base.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-A ring of foam circles the gleaming blood red.
-The malty sweetness is also reminiscent of licorice.
-Mouthfeel is leaner than Thomas Hardy’s Ale or other classic British-style Barley Wines.
-Not quite sure why the beer’s name is a direct reference of Thomas Hardy’s when the beer neither smells nor tastes like Thomas Hardy’s.
-I get the idea of adding coriander to a Brltish Barley Wine base (it works well with Traquair Jacobite, so why not try, right?), but the balance is off, even after aging it for 2 years.

Bottle.

341ml bottle from Marché Omni in Gatineau, Quebec. Rich deep mahogany in colour with a very thin beige head, little to no lacing. The aroma is of toffee sweetness, light alcohol, brown sugar, light spice. The flavour is a bit boozy, lots of toffee sweetness, earthy and woody, some fruit. Warming mouthfeel, medium body, moderate carbonation. Finishes long, warm. Not sure what to think, quite warming but drinkable. Not as full bodied as I would have liked.

Deep ruby clear body. Tiny white head. Strong aroma of dried fruits (plum, raisin), caramel, sweet malt, alcohol, port like flavours. Flavours of port, dried plum, raison, caramel, light hoppy notes, warm alcohol backbone. Medium sweet, warm, bitter and port finish. Very nice barleywine. A bit too warm maybe. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pour a clear red amber topped by a finger or so of creamy tanned head showing good retention and fair lacing properties. The nose is honey, some banana and alcohol. The taste is sweet, warm, liquorish. Very much honey oriented, like a good mead. Nutty malts come through just before the liquorish finish. Full bodied, oily texture. This is liquid candy. Cheers!
