I’m sort of surprised by how well-reviewed this stuff is. Not that I didn’t enjoy it, but I’m not as convinced as many below me. Pour is amber with the merest hint of a greyish-brown cap. Nose is lots of expected sugary/caramel sweetness, but with surprising (to me) herbal elements. There’s something here’s that’s almost like masala chai, along with raisins, candied cherries and orange peel, plus lots of sugar. Taste-wise it’s sweet and syrupy, lots of herbal/tea notes, noticeable but well-balanced alcohol. Sherry-like elements, more than port, although the sweetness up front reminds me more of a Pineau de Charentes, or an ice wine. The bottle I had was six months old, so hops are virtually nonexistent, save for a touch of bitterness on the finish. Neat stuff.

Notes: Fresh bread dough, bread crust, port, raisins, red candied fruits, cherry, cola, semi-sweet chocolate, medium roasted coffee, toffee, brown sugar, big bold malty nose with a good complexity as it warms up. Light earthy, herbal hop bitterness. Temperature is key for this beer. Don’t drink this cold or you’ll miss out. An awesome, rich, big sirupy and satisfying beer perfect for dessert. A big sipper that could be pair with a nice cigar or dark chocolate.

Bottle. Light pumpernickel aroma with some faint earthy hops and moderate citrusy fermentation esters. Slightly hazy ruddy copper under a lasting off white flannel blanket. Very sweet, sugary flavour with some nutty sherry-like accents and medium bitterness. Full body, moderate, cloying.

2014-10-25. Lightly cloudy dark amber brown body with a small frothy tan had. 3+ Aroma is fairly malty, pleasantly so, with a good amount of carmael and toffee notes, light molassess and moderate alcohol presence. 7++ Flavour is similarly malt forward, toffee/caramel sweetness but with finishes with enough bitterness to keep it fairly balanced. Moderate alcohol throughout. Relatively simple but a very solid take on the style. Enjoyable. Medium bodied palate with soft carbonation. On cask at Cask Days, Toronto.

At Cask Days 2014. Dried fruits, maple syrup, pancake, warming alcohol, hints of spice, dry finish. Fine barley wine but maybe a bit too boozy
