Lubiere (8243) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - FEB 7, 2013
A reddish copper barley wine with a very thin off white head. In aroma, classic vinous malyt with nice floral British hops, range, licorice, & light molasses. In mouth,, a smooth sweet vinous malt with licorice, plums, dark fruits, reminiscent of Macneil’s Old Ringworm.

The nice rubyish oragen brick pour is clear and quickly becoming headless. Boy is there some sugar in that nose. Dried fruit candies with its estery English yeast throwing little red berries, apricot, raisins and Belgianesque banana all at once, as the malts are all on the dessert side of things, toffee laden to a fault andbrash earthy hops never really manage to rally and bring some sense to this finish, neither can the rough, pointy small bubbles. The sugariness just dominates those two strong counter-balancing features away. While no lightweight, it constantly feels like those caramelly malts should warrant a sterner build. I suspect the unforgivingly fine filtration is at cause here. Not being a huge advocate of aging beers, I can nevertheless see myself digging that one more after a year or two of maturing. Its intensely filtered texture will probably get loose and slick, but the biting bubbles fade-out would probably be for the best. At the same time, the oxidation may shake the current leather and stewed, candy-like fruitiness hints. It all may evolve into something along the lines of a sherry. In its youth though, I find it overwhelmingly sugary and still fairly closed, not as deeplly malty as it could be, but I’d be surprised if the latter evolves significantly. I’ll try again later as it’s reasonably priced and I expect a favourable evolution, but I’m not jumping back to the store to buy a case.

Boutip (3972) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - FEB 3, 2013
Bottle: Poured a dark hazy amber color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of sugar with some dried fruit notes is quite enticing. Taste is a solid mix of caramelized malt with nice notes of toffee and a good amount of residual sugar. Body is quite full with good carbonation and not apparent alcohol. Solid rendition of an English style barleywine with just enough residual sugar.

Clear dark amber pour with a thin beige head. Interesting aroma of caramel, raisins and mild alcohol vapors. The flavor is ok, but a bit simple, caramel and raisins, also the aroma feels a lot more deep and rich than the flavor. The body is thick but the texture is not as liquorous or vinous as you’d expect from a barley wine, the carbonation is soft. Overall it’s an ok barley wine.

Bouteille 341ml.

Bottle - 341ml. Dark brown body with ruby glints and a thin off-white foamy head. Rich, complex malty/hoppy aroma with fruity, brown sugar, and cinnamon hints. Alcohol is relatively well hidden. Its sharp, robust taste is slightly dominated by hoppy flavors. It also carries malty, oaky, and vineous notes. Ends with a strong, very warming bittersweet finish. Without being a top notch barley wine, this is not bad at all.

probstblueribbon (2378) - Nepean, Ontario, CANADA - MAR 15, 2013
341 ml bottle from Broue Ha Ha, served cool in a tulip glass.

App.: Clear very deep copper with a fair orange-tan head. Aroma: Tons of sweet, rich, thick malts, toffee/treacle, brown sugar, dark dried fruits, a touch of brightness and butterscotch, dark rye bread crust, some booze, dark rum, molasses notes, nothing much from the hops. Palate: Medium-full body, sparse and prickly effervescence, slick. Flav.: Much like the nose with heaps of rich maltiness, quite fruity and thick, so much dark dried fruit and brown sugar, a little molasses, big malt; sweet with sufficient bitterness for balance, and a long, boozy richly sweet malty finish.

A sipper for sure.

pours relatively clear dark amber, red tint, with a small light beige head, little retention, some lacing. dark red fruits, raisins, cloying caramel, some spices and yeast, some phenols, boozy. medium hopping - load of earthy hops that leads to a short to medium long grassy-citrusy finish. average carbonation, medium body. ok.
