bunget (317) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - APR 17, 2013
341ml bottle. Beautiful deep amber body, medium crème brûlée head with good retention. Aroma of leather, roasted malt, toffee, figs, dried fruit and floral hops. Taste of roasted malt, caramel, a good bouquet of floral hops, a little bit of woodiness, some tart berries. Medium body with a nice roasted malt aftertaste. Lovely dubbel.

341 ml bottle. Pours a nice hazy brown, with a thin beige head. Smells of oak, tastes of typical belgian yeast, bready, fieldberries, hazelnuts. Very little bitterness ; almost imperceptible. Lingering green grapes taste. Body is watery, carbonation is somewhat high, alcohol is imperceptible. A very good double abbey.

Bottle. I am not a pro in Dubbel, but this one seems to be pretty near the style (according to what I read) The smell of the beer is very yeasty, but fruity too. In the mouth, the beer is very heavy. Good, but heavy. It is a fruity beer, very sweet. The color of the beer is Ruby Red. Hazy, but not totally cloudy. The finish of this beer is lightly bitter, almost sour. Very complex, but definitly for degustation, not for drinking on a patio.

Boutip (3971) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - NOV 15, 2011
Bottle: Poured a deep amber color ale with a large off-white foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of candi sugar and fruity ester is quite charming. Taste is a nice balance mix between some candi sugar notes with some fruity ester and solid malt backbone with light dry fruits. Body is about average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well brewed with nice drinkability/complexity level.

Bonne odeur vive. Belle couleur rouge foncé. Pas de mousse et peu de dentelle. Goût acre de cannelle. Reste de l’amertume en arrière goût. Je trouve qu’elle tourne plus vers une rousse qu’une brune.

Aroma: Smelling roasted barley, burnt rubber, blackcurrant leaves.
Appearance: A clear brownish read beer with a warm off-white head, little lacing but good curtains.
Taste: Starting with brown toast, toffee, fruits, grape-fruit peel.
Palate: Medium carbonation, soft and sticky, big body.
Overall: A malt dominated brew. Rather bland.
Note: Bottle 341 ml, thx to KM. Reviewed 2012-08-25.

My Bottom Line :
This Dubbel is the setting for the synergistic relationship of earthy cocoa, candied fruit and peppery hop flavors, all evolving in a frothy mouthfeel perfect to showcase pleasant intricacies.

Further Personal Perceptions :
-A beautiful head of foam recedes into the ruby red (colour is thus a tad lighter than the usual Dubbel).
-Flavor intensity is delicate, which is perfect for this highly drinkable brew.
-This might not be earth-shattering within its category, but it is highly harmonious and enjoyable throughout.
-The nose is more singular than the flavor profile.
-Leafy hops accompany earthy cocoa impressions into the finish.
-Flavor profile is balanced from beginning to end.
-Body is lean (not too sweet, yeah!) and the residual sugars are well levelled with the carbonation’s medium-high intensity.
-There aren’t enough dark malt flavors for my personal tastes in the style.

Bottle.

12oz bottle. Pours a ruby brown with a big gaseous head that grew out of the glass. The aromas are faint but whiffs of raisins and cherry. Its taste very similar to some flemish reds, a little sweet burnt sugar and a touch of sour cherry. Nice undertones of cola, fig and hazelnuts. Pleasant Surprise!
