glennmastrange (2145) - hobe sound, Florida, USA - JAN 27, 2014
Bottle. Heavy molasses and burnt for the malt, light resin for the hops, light to moderate earth for the yeast, with tar in the backgound. Head is small, fizzy/frothy, light brown with fair lacing and is mostly diminishing. Flavo starts very dark brown. Flavor starts moderately sweet and acidic and a bit sou, then the long finishes is lightly to moderately sweet and acidic and lightly bitte. Palate is full, between creamy and syrupy with a soft carbonation and a sticky finish. The label says Imperial Stout but it’s pretty far from that. It has some good qualities though, maybe better classified as an American Strong Ale.

A big deception for me. The beer add a to strong taste of coriender. So for the amateur only. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours in dark black body with tan low head. Aroma is extreme coffee, light toffee with hints of roasty, dried plums. Taste is sweet upfront with medium short lasting bitterness. Body is light, low carbonation.

Pours ok, pitch black with good mocha head, some lacing. Aroma is like one of those booze chocolates except the chocolate isn’t that good. This isn’t a total disaster - there are some decent elements that could make for a good beer if tweaked a little like an interesting smoked malt aroma. Finishes oddly sweet and boozy though and generally unbalanced. Bottle.

My Bottom Line:
This spiced-up Imperial Stout lays out coriander, licorice and roastiness onto viscous molasses, while alcohol heat and green hop bitterness slowly rise in the second half.

Further Personal Perceptions:
-The head of foam loudly pops and fizzes away into the darkness.
-The mouthfeel could be tighter; the tiny bubbles cannot balance out the portentous residual sugars.
-If this were a Cigar City Imperial Stout (cause it tastes like one), it would be getting much better reviews.
-The nose is overwhelmingly spicy. In a blind tasting, from the aroma alone, I would have said this is an Abbaye des Rocs brew...
-You can almost feel your teeth getting deeper cavities with each sip...
-This tastes like a tweak of Le Saint-Bock’s R.I.P...

Boutip (4490) - Gatineau, Quebec, CANADA - OCT 14, 2013
Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a medium size brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of star anise with light roasted malt/black chocolate notes and some residual sugar notes. Taste is a great mix between some black chocolates notes with loads of star anise notes and some residual sugar notes. Body is about average with good c carbonation and no apparent alcohol. I am not the biggest fan of the brewery and the previous ratings are quite bad but I actually really enjoyed this one.

(Rating #5133)
