Scotch Ales originated in Scotland, but a little-known fact is that versions were also created in Belgium. In tribute to the Scottish soldiers who helped free Belgium at the end of World War II, Belgian brewers began to brewing the beer style loved by their Scottish liberators. Brewed according to this tradition, Le Trinqueur offers a nice, round maltiness with hints of dried fruit and burnt caramel. Coriander seeds add a fine herbal note to complement these flavours.

Robe brune et trouble. Pas de mousse. Arômescafé, épices, fruits noirs. Goût épicé (on reconnaît la coriandre), caramel, chocolat, fruit noirs.

Sharing session at Budapest. Aroma is oak and caramel. Taste is earthy oak with caramel and dark fruits. Slightly boozy and a little sharp in the bitterness

341ml bottle from Marché Omni in Gatineau, Quebec. Muddy brown in colour with a thin brown head, light lacing. The aroma is of caramel, some wood, some liquorice, corriander. The flavour is of corriander, caramel sweetness, lots of liquorice, pepper spice, herbal. Warming mouthfeel, medium body, moderate carbonation. Finishes long, with lots of liquorice. I get lots more liquorice then corriander in this. Its an interesting beer for sure. Nice.

Pours a seemingly cllear mahogany topped by a small tanned head showing average retention and leaving nice lacing. Thr nose is buterscotch, toffee, oak, peppercorn, milk chocolate. The taste follows the nose with a woody, somewhat spicy sweetness. The brew is fairly boozy and feels pretty liquorish. It drops to a warm vapory finish where I found the earthy hops get to shine. Pretty good beer overall and very satisfying. Cheers!

UPDATED: FEB 11, 2015 Intersting interpretation of a scotch ale. Can’t easily discern the coriander. A bit lighter bodied than the majority of beers in this style.
