L’Exploité is a mellow and sweet moka stout. The word “stout” first emerged during the 18th century, apparently used to differentiate stronger porters that were typically tastier and drier than usual. During this period, semi-sweet and low alcohol dark beers were often consumed by Londons dock workers, who were also known as “Porters.” Exploited by merchants and importers, paid per unit carried, Porters worked hard, barely stopping to have a full meal, preferring instead to drink a sweet, low alcohol beer, often the cheapest one, which came to be known “Porter’s beer”. Coffee and cocoa beans began appearing in England during this era. Porters frequently had to carry heavy bags of these products for merchants who were making a fortune processing these beans. The first coffee, an arabica variety, was primarily imported from the port city of Mocha in Yemen and had a subtle cocoa aroma. In tribute to these exploited porters who carried thousands of coffee bags on their broken backs, coffee was included in this beer. As in many parts of the world, the word mocha is associated with a flavor combination of coffee and chocolate, so we added some locally processed cocoa beans as well, since porters must have surely carried their share of these cocoa bean bags too. A bit of lactose and a touch of vanilla have also been added to complement these flavours. L’Exploité presents mellow and complex notes of torrefaction ranging from roasted nuts to burnt caramel, incorporating Mocha coffee and sweet dark chocolate. The low bitterness and alcohol bite are wrapped in the residual sugars, which balances and smoothes the flavors in your mouth.

341ml bottle Pours in a pitch black with a creamy white head. Sweet aromas of milkshake and milk chocolate. Full body, very sweet, with cacao and cold vanilla coffee dominating the mix, with a very slight metallic presence in the middle palate that is hidden prety quickly by all the sweetness of the chocolate malts. A bit too sweet for my taste but still a good beer. It deserve well it’s Stout Moka moniker.

341 ml bottle.
Pours deep dark ruby red, almost black color with a large beige head. Chocolaty aroma with cocoa and malt bitterness, subtle coffee notes, mild hops and roasted notes. Flavor is bitter malty, very roasty, subtle syrupy sweetness, caramel and chocolate, finish is licorice and coffee. Dry yet sweet, carbonation is tad strong but fits here nicely, quite interesting and flavorful.

A deep dark stout with a thick collapsing brown head. In aroma, beautiful sweet fruity chocolate malt with light milky notes, treacle, light vanilla extract, alcohol warmth, very nice. In mouth, a nice sweet fruity chocolate malt with light herbal hops, light mineral notes, light vanilla, light powdery character, interesting and pleasing. Bottle from Brouhaha, Gatineau.

Opaque black color. Thick creamy brown 2 finger head lasting around 10 minutes. Average head and no visible activity. Strong aromas and flavors of roasted nuts and coffee, cocoa, vanilla, slightly spicy and metallic. Rich earthy and sweet vinous smell but more of a sharp highly roasted taste. Creamy milky body with perfect carbonation. Well balanced finish ending with a bitter smoky chocolate cappuccino like aftertaste. Overall : Promising craft but a bit unbalanced with excessively bitter roasted taste (missing some sweetness) and slightly off with freshness being a little metallic.

341 ml bottle from Drummondville Metro. Pours a very dark brown with beige head that leaves decent lace. Aroma is fairly sweet with some roastiness to balance, notes of chocolate and coffee as well as a little alcohol. Flavour is also a little more sweet than roasty with chocolate, coffee and a little dark fruit. Oily mouthfeel. Body is a little lighter than I’d have expected. Solid.

Bottle, from Beer Revolution, Calgary. Dark brown, amber highlights, average beige head. Sweet coffee and roast aroma and flavour, chocolate too, burnt bitterness. A tad thin with aggressive carbo, which diminishes the enjoyment somewhat.
