muzzlehatch (4424), Burlington, Vermont, USA Aug 22, 2007 500 ml bottle from Métro Joannette, Verdun QC (May 2007) served at cellar temperature from a Corsendonk Christmas Ale glass. A huge, smooth puffy light tan head decays slowly, leaving fine spidery lacing atop the burnished brass liquid.....lots of spicing in the nose: coriander, orange zest, ginger and a bit of vanilla coexisting nicely with thick caramel and dry, lightly funky Belgian yeast....the body, likewise, is a delicate balance between strong spicing and drying, slightly bitter yeast character and a thick sweetness that is kept in check throughout but remains slightly dominant....the mouthfeel, soft but strong; never feeling delicate, but not overbearing in its thick glossiness either...peppery finish, moderate to strong carbonation....can’t say this is exactly exciting, but it does everything basically right and makes for a solid mainstream example of the style I’d say.
blankboy (2625), Toronto, Ontario, Canada Sep 30, 2008 Bottle (500ml) courtesy of Viper666, as ’Brasseurs et Frères 2ième Anniversaire 2008’. Pours a clear bubbly orange-amber with a diminishing average size off-white head. Aroma’s a little sweet with some alcohol noticeable along with dark fruit, caramel, yeast and candi sugar -- it’s not bad but it doesn’t quite gel like it should. Flavour’s sweet and kind of flat, with caramel malt, alcohol, honey, some fruit and candi sugar. It has an odd boozy bitter finish -- there’s something about it I don’t love. Average bodied, sticky mouthfeel. This beer is not awful but it’s a bit of a mess: It’s too sweet, too boozy and too unbalanced, I’m not enjoying drinking it.
CapFlu (3340), Victoria, British Columbia, Canada Aug 23, 2008 (Draught) Sampled at Brouhaha. Pours a dissipated white head with a copper body. Nose of strong alcohol, fruit and caramel. Flavour is fairly floral and malty. Smooth but plain. Missing some complexity. Boutip (1815), Gatineau, Quebec, Canada Jun 18, 2008 Bottle: Poured a medium copper/brown color ale with a large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of caramel and toffee malt is quite sweet. Taste is also a mix between some caramel and toffee malt with a very sweet ending. Definitely not a pure dubbel as per style guideline but more of mix between a dubbel and a scotch ale. Body is quite full with some good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Well done overall and something I wouldn’t mind having more regularly. marcbé (79), Trois-Rivières, Quebec, Canada Jun 8, 2008 2 aniversaire. 500 ml. clear amber color no head. some caramel flavor and some cereal. not that great.
