UPDATED: DEC 20, 2006 Unfiltered versionPale amber, fully cloudy pour. Lasting thin white head. The juicy, figs, assertive mandarines-like flavors that we could find in their Mort de Rire are also plenty here. Nicely stated english character evokes soap, raw barley and selected orangey, foresty hops, assumingly fuggles at least partly with their spicy, finish and growing woody and mineralic bitterness that blends with Tasty little bitter, though the hop character seems underwhelming under that strong yeast influence. Honest low carbonation fits well, so does the bottle-conditioning, offering a rather rounded, good textured ale.

This was one of my favourite breweries before it changed owners. The new beers I have tried from its replacement Brasserie Dunham have been decent but not quite as good as the predecessor. I was happy to find this but also reticent about how fresh it would be since the brewery has been out of business for a long time. Yet an untried beer from an out of business favourite brewery was too strong a temptation to resist. Thankfully the beer still tasted quite fresh. A very nice bitter with a roasty malt and well hopped bitterness. Very crisp and fresh tasting. I will probably go back to the store and buy the rest of what they have of this. Too bad they did not have any of their IPA, Hoppy.

Originally rated September 2006. Bought at the Dépanneur À-Tout-Prix in Laval, Quebec. Pours a cloudy caramel-looking colour with a foamy head that stays a while. Not much carbonation. The nose is hoppy-bitter with some light caramel malt. Mouthfeel is a bit on the oily side. The taste is nice and floral at first, with some cereal malt and a sharp hoppy finish. Some mild roasted malt is also present. A very pleasant brew for fans of the hop.

Bouteille 341 ml. 4.5%. Couleur ambrée assez pâle. Arômes de houblon floral et malt. En bouche, douce, notes de houblon et malt. Finale pas trop amère, se boit bien. Bonne.

341 ml bottle from Broue Ha Ha, served cool in a tulip glass.

App.: Clear amber with a small white head. Aroma: Cooked grain/cereal, a green, vegetal note (almost want to call it canned peas), earthy, almost a mushroom note, some biscuit trying to claw its way out, not great. Palate: Medium body, restrained effervescence. Flav.: Better. Some leafy, peppery hops, a bit of pine, less of that vegetal note, some restrained, austere malts, a little burnt sugar, still not great; dry with surprisingly assertive bitterness and a dry, British malt finish with some pepperiness.

Not often a fan of British-style ales. This one doesn’t convert me.

Pours with little head and a decent amber body. Soft aroma of hops and Christmas cake. Taste is very hoppy with a bitter finish. Pretty good for the style, in fact.

This is dark cold with a coppery cast, and off white solid head is rocky. Nose is pretty non-descript - I guess some sweetness and herbal hop. Taste is fairly classic British - earth and herb, stony-dry light bitterness, crisp malt. Creamy Quebec character. A bit soapy feel but overall decent.

Sample at Vice et Versa in Montreal. A dark copper, slightly hazy with decent head. Aroma is sweet malt, slightly barnyard. Taste has a hint of bubblegum, pleasing bitterness and a decent malt back. Lingers nicely.
