Underneath Lucan sits a large, ancient granite aquifer which delivers classic brewing water for a malty ale. At Brau Bros, we fill in the remaining ingredients to brew Bancreagie Peated Scotch Ale. Named for the light-colored rock itself, Bancreagie relies on a complex and deep malt bill, featuring authentic peat-smoked malt. A traditional Scottish yeast is pitched and ferments a sweet, smoky and malty ale.

Bottle. A- Malty, caramel, subtle booze, peat, slightly sweet. A- Red amber color, clear liquid, off white head. T- Subtle whisky, malty, caramel, slightly sweet. P- Medium body, average texture, average carbonation, smooth finish. O- I should never have started with the two Bastards form Founders as my intro into Scotch Ales. I think they ruined me. This was a solid offering though. A little sweet and the booze wasn’t much of a bourbon flavor as I wished, but it felt alright.

Bancreagie is one of those beers I decided to try almost in spite of myself. It was the peat-smoked malt I was unsure of. Truth is, I get mildly annoyed when brewers try to combine Scotch Ales with Scotch whiskey elements. Honestly, I feel the only similarity both beverages share is their name. Still, it sounded interesting. Beers with smoke are fun. To that end, Bancreagie succeeded. The smoke adds a layer of meatiness that isn’t too strong. It gives off a slightly rosy smell that reminds me of, yes, Scotch. However, as a whole, this brew didn’t work for me. I love the richness, sweetness, and complexity of Scotch Ales. This one was thin and not especially warm or flavorful. After having a superb experience with Moo Joos, this was disappointing.

Aromas of caramel and faint booze. Pours a clear copper color with a thin white head. Taste is sweet like caramel with a hint of alcohol. Slightly malty. Not getting much peat. Palate is a little thin. Overall not a bad beer ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Decent enough smoky beer. Reddish brown. Definitely smoky and malty aroma. Taste brings in the peat characteristics…but decent subtle. Some caramel sweetness. Medium bodied. Not bad.

The smoky, earthy flavor of the peated grains shows up in the aroma and the flavor. It gives the beer a unique flavor. Dark, honey-colored beer. Decent head. It’s a very smooth, flavorful, and enjoyable beer. It’s not overly strong tasting, so you could drink more than one without getting tired of it. I would strongly consider buying it again soon. I would certainly order one if it was on tap.

Bottle. No head at all, amber. Seems thin, but mild flavor is refreshing. The smokiness is subtle, but still present. More malty than yeasty, but well-balanced all around. Very comfortable and pleasant!

Froma 330ml brown bottle. Orange pour with a thin soapy head that fades quick. Sweetish nose with floral notes and peat. Taste of smoke/peat/wood. A bit mild overall.
