3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
6/15/14. 12oz bottle from Happy’s in Cedar Falls. Deep red brown pour with a small khaki head that fades to a small ring. Sweet aroma, cherry, chalky caramel, oxidized, mild chocolate. Mild, sweet flavor, not particularly peaty or smokey, more of a hint of bitter, charred chocolate and caramel, some cherry and oxidation. Eh.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
12oz. bottle. Aroma of caramel sweetness, nutty malt toast, peat smoke and dark bread. Mostly clear medium-dark copper color with a creamy, lasting, off-white head and very fine lacing. Flavor profile is earthy, sugary, malty and lightly smoky, some very light spicy hop bitterness and caramel, more peat is present here as well, finishing with lingering smokiness, faint banana and herbal hop tones. Finely effervescent on the palate with a very mild warmth and a medium-full body. Not a lot of complexity here, but good enough.

4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Pours a dark amber with very little head. Nose is of sweet malt. Taste is of peat smoked sweet malt, very flavorful, with a rich creamy mouthfeel. Finish is slightly sweet but also with a hint of hops for a slightly dry finish. Well paired with a brat off the grill.

3 AROMA 3/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 15/20
Not my favorite offering among Scotch Ales. Tasty, pleasant experience though. Aroma is almost nothing. Pours rich amber, brown with thin head, and no lacing. Initial taste is earthy, smoky, nutty, semi sweet (mushroom? Peat, yeah, that’s it!). Palate fades rapidly to a mild, acidic bite. Nothing special, but does advertise that it is "peated" Scotch Ale, and if you know what to look for, you will find the peat taste before you find the 7.6% Alcohol in this silent heavyweight ;)

2.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20
Pours a dirty orange with no head and not much lacing. Aroma is mild malts and peated smoke. Taste is sweet for a second, then dry, earthy, with a moderate amount of peat and smoke. Palate is carbonated and thin. Nothing to see here for me.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle from Breeze Thru, cellar aged 3 months; purchased in the block for my other brother’s scotch ale grouping. Pours an unclear coppery brown with almost no head. Swirling supplies some spots of white lace. Aroma has peat ... and peat. Eventually some brown sugar shows through with some light smoke. Taste is of sweet brown sugar, peat, some smoky meat, raisins. Medium bodied and syrupy, although thin. FInishes short. Shrug? Not my favorite style unless very well done, and this does not qualify.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
12 ounce bottle into snifter, no bottle dating. Pours slightly hazy/cloudy deep orange copper color with a 1 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty soapy lacing clings on the glass, with a moderate amount of streaming carbonation. Aromas of caramel, toast, biscuit, light chocolate, raisin, pear, brown bread, peat smoke, light nuttiness, herbal, and yeast/smokey earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, peat smoke, and fruity/earthy yeast ester notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toast, biscuit, brown bread, raisin, pear, light chocolate, peat smoke, light nuttiness, herbal, and yeast/smokey earthiness. Slight earthy hop bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, biscuit, light chocolate, brown bread, herbal, peat smoke, light nuttiness, and yeast/smokey earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, peat smoke, and fruity/earthy yeast flavors; with good robustness and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth and lightly slick/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice scotch ale. Good balance and complexity of dark/bready malt, fruity/earthy yeast, and moderate peat smoke flavors; and very smooth to sip on for the ABV. A nicely enjoyable offering.

From a 12 oz bottle shared in Bozeman MT. Pours a hazy brownish amber with an off white head. Malty nose with caramel notes. Flavor of caramel and toasted nuts. Light to medium bodied, moderate carbonation, and quickly vanishing sweet finish.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20
I was definitely disappointed in the flavor. The flavors were not in balance and tasted sour but not in a good way. This is probably the worst Scotch Ale I’ve had and I’m glad I only bought one bottle.
