COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Underneath Lucan sits a large, ancient granite aquifer which delivers classic brewing water for a malty ale. At Brau Bros, we fill in the remaining ingredients to brew Bancreagie Peated Scotch Ale. Named for the light-colored rock itself, Bancreagie relies on a complex and deep malt bill, featuring authentic peat-smoked malt. A traditional Scottish yeast is pitched and ferments a sweet, smoky and malty ale.

[Bottle] Pours deep red with a very small head (it vanished so quickly that I didn’t manage to record what color it was). Aroma is unusual. I don’t get smoke, but rather burnt popcorn and some subdued caramel sweetness. A little earthiness as well, but the burnt popcorn character is hard to get past. Taste is more enjoyable, with the burnt popcorn and earthiness both still there, but with the latter now more dominant. There is also moderate bitterness and a very mild sweetness that I can’t peg, but that is very enjoyable. Really melds nicely together after warming for a bit. Medium-thin mouthfeel, fairly smooth, and has a long, moderately dry finish. Overall, a pretty decent beer. I’m not crazy about the aroma, but the taste really grew on me, and leaves me thinking that I may pick up a couple more bottles of this some time.

12 oz bottle from Dalzale. Nose is sweet toffee, very light smoke and peat, and a hint of bubblegum and golden raisins lurking in the background. Clear lighter rusty brown with a small beige head. Flavor is white peppery, a hint of bitterness, sweetness, and a lightly burnt smokiness.

Pour on tap at Winterfest 2012, pour is dark red with white head, aroma brings notes of some slight peat, smoke, mainly caramel, toffee and burnt toast notes, hints of nuts as well. Taste is a slight hint of smoke and peat going into some sweet caramel, bitter earth finishes dry and slightly sweet.

Jan 29, 2012 tap at valley tap house. Translucent bronze pour with some haed and lacing. Aroma is smoke, peat and malt. Taste is consistent with a little spice in there. Somewhat more carbonated than many scotch ales I have had.

I enjoyed this at a strange little ballroom in Southern Minnesota. I was dreading the wedding keg beer, and found that they had a local brewery (Lucan) and this seemed like the best of the offerings. It is tasty, and I got tipsy. Thank you Brau Bro.

12 oz bottle from a Brau Brothers sampler pack. Pours a clear copper color with light tan head and some lacing. Another Brau Bros. concoction which made me say Wow on first sip. Smells malty and yeasty but has an aroma like nothing else I’ve tried. I expected a bitter Scotch Ale but was impressed by the definite smoky flavor and sweet earthy aftertaste. Who’d have thunk that burnt compost would be the special ingredient for a memorable beer? Very drinkable in an odd way. I’ll definitely pick up more of this on my next trip to Minnesota.

Light gold color. The aroma is surprisingly Belgian yeast. Dry. Very little peat, or malt really. I hoped there would be more of an earthy character. Bone dry finish.
