COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Moo Joos combines the full body of a Milk Stout with the silky smoothness of an Oatmeal Stout. Lactose sugar in the boil contributes a full and creamy mouthfeel while toasted and flaked oats in the mash round out the beer with an oily texture. A deep malt bill builds layers of roasty notes with hints of chocolate, coffee and anise. A traditional British Cask Yeast is then pitched, which leaves us with a fruity, malty ale.

Pours pitch black. Seriously. I held it up to light and could not see through it. Brownish tan head. not much lacing on the glass. Smells of roasted coffee, chocolate and molasses. Taste is bitter chocolate, coffee, roasted malts. Nice creamy mouthfeel with little carbonation and silky smooth on the palate. I enjoyed this Milk Stout through and through.

Pours black. Aroma and taste are sweet chocolate, some roasted malts, and a smooth finish.

The dubious selection at the hotel bar at least offered this novel sounding oatmeal stout. The results were not nearly as bad as I thought they might be. While I would probably not pick up more it does merit at least a couple of ounces if you run across a bottle and want a respectable Minnesota tick.

Aroma / Appearance - A rich black base supports waves of beige head. Cool oatmeal cookies on a ledge blend with smoke in a dry sweetness.

Flavor / Palate - Cooling oatmeal refreshes the tongue. Ash, cold campfire residue, and then a malty finish brings to mind the shadows of Founders Breakfast Stout. It does not belong in the same class as the best of breed but as a local offering this could make a solid daily drinker for colder months.

355ml bottle. Brown pout. Thi sis really not stout-liek at all and to me a very poor stout. Very mish-mashed between flavors and lacks any semblance of body.

Drank warm. Dark black. Creamy chocolate. I pick up on the anise, but only after reading that it has it. I’d like to try others from this brewery.

Probably my favorite milk stout yet. A sweet start with a slightly bitter finish, pairs perfectly with any burger or pork sandwich.

Opaque black with a negligible head size. Dark chocolate, malt, overt roast, and a touch of vanilla in regards to aroma. Smooth and slightly thinner than a typical stout. Flavour contains a smooth and easy drinking combination of roast and chocolate. No hop. I prefer intenser flavours with stouts, but recognize that this is in fact a milk stout.

First bottle to a tulip glass. Even though the pour was moderately aggressive, no head at all, just a tan ring. No visible carbonation. Second bottle to a pilsener glass, very aggressive pour, to better cause a head and view any carbonation. 2nd time, a 1 inch tan head, bubbly, dissipates relatively quickly with lacing. Carbonation is virtually nonexistant; an occasional bubble is visible rising up, and I have to hold it to the light to see that. After a few minutes, no visible carbonation at all. Dark brown to black color. Very nice roasted aroma. Taste follows the aroma, dominated by roasted malts, transitioning to sweetness and a touch of bitterness. Aftertaste is sweet and only slightly bitter. Body is a bit thin and flat. Very flat. Overall, this is a very blah beer. Not very good at all. It is not drain-pour bad, but there is nothing special at all in this beer and the lack of mouth feel makes it really a struggle to try to enjoy. Given the reviews, I expected a lot more. I gave this beer 2 full bottles before writing this review. While the 2nd made perhaps a slightly better impression than the first, this does rank as the worst stout/porter I’ve had to date, admittedly not a huge sample population, but I definitely won’t be buying this one again.
