3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20 sthlm (1227) - Iowa, USA - APR 24, 2013
[Bottle] Pours deep red with a small beige head. Aroma is really big on alcohol, with some caramel and barrel as well. Taste is also fairly boozy and definitely barrel heavy, but enjoyable nonetheless. Quite sweet, but not out of control, with lots of coconut and dark chocolate. The Templeton really shines, and this ends up being very dessert-like. Decent mouthfeel, quite smooth with a good finish length where the malt and barrel battle for dominance. Being in Iowa, I see Templeton Rye barrels used for aging fairly often, most notably by Rock Bottom, and I think it really works out nicely. This beer is no exception, and was a very solid offering from Brau Brothers, even if it was a little too hot and lacked the complexity to bump it into the 4’s (although I did love the coconut and dark chocolate character). Really great to see this brewery turning out solid products like this though, and I hope they keep it up.

Big dark fruit aroma. Really sweet with raisin and plum palate. Similar to a BRETT beer. Quite unique with sweet finish. Tasty.

Dark ruby brown/mahogany. Small, lasting beige head, lots of lace. Aroma is unique, very toasty, rye, fruity, caramel, sweet, malty. Full body, toasty, sweet, hop/rye/booze finish. Soft carbonation. Pretty smooth. Had some (a few ;) of the Templeton Rye whiskey prior; can definitely taste it. Woody, toast, caramel, vanilla, rye, whiskey; unique and enjoyable. Belly warming.

initial aroma reminds me of toast and maple syrup. malt, caramel. rye, fruity.
Taste-slight boozy, malt, caramel. Something smooth, creamy, possibly vanilla. very slight bitter finish. Had the Templeton Rye Whiskey beforehand, can taste that in the beer.
Delicious.

25.4 oz bottle. Cloudy brown with edgy beige froth. Nose is wood, whiskey, dusty caramel and blackberry. Medium to full body with a lively tang. Finishes dry with slight stickiness. Taste is caramel, rye, sour mash and wood with hints of red wine, cinnamon and porcinis a bit like Oerbier.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle. Pours a darker copper with a beige head of foam. Aroma is spicy and somewhat sweet like a caraway seed. A banana note comes through in aroma and taste. Very sweet beer. Barrel is difficult to find. Interesting beer for sure.
3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20 UnionBeerCzar (75) - Michigan, USA - MAR 15, 2013
Waxed 7fity split amongst many small glasses. Dark ruby red pour with nips of white head. Smells of whiskey and grain on the nose. Drinks like a standard barley wine with the obvious addition of spice not only from the beer but the barrel as well, really cool take on this style. Hotness is not present only that crazy spiciness, full mouthfeel with mild carbonation. Perfect beer for a cold last night of winter.
3.7 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20 Treebs (733) - , Illinois, USA - MAR 10, 2013
Thanks to supercolter for the brew. 750 ml waxed bottle served in a Southern Tier tulip. 2011 vintage.
A: Pours a murky brown color with some ruby highlights. A whitish head forms on the pour and recedes to a thin ring. Some splotchy lace is left down the glass.
S: Plum sweetness with some raisins. Definitive rye spice with a big whiskey backing. Roasted malts with underlying barrel sweetness.
T: Rye spice with the whiskey notes is large up front. Pretty hot as well still. Notes of oak, smooth caramel and some figs. Booze soaked raisins as well.
M: Medium bodied with a slightly higher than anticipated carbonation. Whiskey finish.
O: Surprisingly still a little hot, and I would have liked a little more chewiness on the texture and a little less carbonation. Overall it was still a nice beer.
