3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
UPDATED: JAN 3, 2014 Pours a hazy golden-orange color with medium foamy white head. Strong earthy, piney hops aroma. Hops definitely dominate the flavor but it’s balanced nicely with some sweet and citrusy maltiness. Notes of orange, grapefruit, piney cascade hops, grassy floral hops, and some sweet cereal malts. Long hoppy finish. This is better than expected; much more complex and a fuller mouthfeel. Very good ale from Brau Bros.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Pours copper/brown. It is a sweet malty beer with some fruity hop highlights. Very malt forward for a pale. Alchohol is very present. A bit too sweet for me. I will have to say they are getting better. The first Brau beers I tried tasted like extracts that could be done at home.

Sheep Head is a nice IPA. The hop profile is delightful and the malt balance is prominent, but not overpowering.

Tap. Deep maroon in color with a small white head. Huge caramel malt aroma profile. I’m not able to get any real hop presence which is disappointing. Taste is large amounts of malt with flavors of caramel, sugary chocolate cereal, and a small bitter finish. It isn’t that bad, actually. This is definitely a malt forward pale, but it is pretty good. Maybe a little lighter body with some hint of a hop presence and this would be better.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint.
Pours an orange amber with a very large head. Lots of lacing.
Aroma of citrus and pine hops with some dry malt.
Begins with a very nice balance of strong citrus/pine hop taste (but not too much bitterness) and semi-sweet toasted malts, then suddenly turns very dry and bitter towards the finish.
Very smooth and dry. Medium body and carbonation.
Exceedingly drinkable due to the smooth body and great balance.

On tap Winterfest 2009 St. Paul MN. Pours a hazy orange color with a minimal head. Mild malts, strong bittering and dry hop notes. Hops are fresh and citric. Dry finish, medium bodied. Wasn’t expecting much from this beer but was pleasantly surprised.

Light to no head. No lacing. Hoppy and bitter but somewhat balanced. Like this brewery but this is not one of their best

2.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 8/20
Pours clear golden copper with of white head. The aroma is earthy citrus hops and toasted grains. The flavor is somewhat muted toasted grain with a rich very dry earthy pine floral hop thing that is peculiar. Decent brew but not quite all there.

Tasted at Beer Dabbler event in St. Paul. I would have liked to taste something really special for 300th beer. But the closest I could come is something close to where I used to live in Redwood Falls, MN. This beer was surprisingly complex with a very nice combination of hops enhancing a lot of nice malt and carmel. Actually a lot more flavor than often appears in a pale ale.
