UPDATED: MAY 13, 2013 Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy, light brown, mostly lasting. Body is light brown. Aroma is moderately malty (roasted nuts/seeds, toasted bread, caramel/cookie), lightly to moderately hoppy (herbs, flowers), with light notes of orange peel and toffee. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, moderately bitter. Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation. A lovely rich malt-monster. Plenty of supporting juicy hops, too...really a delight to sniff. Equally well-rounded in the mouth...richly sweet but also plenty of finishing bitterness to keep you quaffing. A no-brainer, really...very clean and enticing, a genuine joy to drink.

Bottle, best by 7/17/13, consumed Feb. 23, 2013: Rusty cinnamon. Fine, foamy eggshell head. Charmingly earthy malt nose allures with notes almond skin, candied fennel seed, hazelnut, milk chocolate, fresh tobacco, breadcrust, and strong minerals. Light note of wax. Creamy, velvety, edgeless carbonation. Profoundly soft, clean, mouth-filling maltiness captivates as it unfolds. Ensuing waxy slickness enhances a vague ripe plum explosion while evening out the richer, more decadent malt intricacies. The strikingly complex malt oozes with depth-lending juices along with palate-lapping dextrins. Finish is laden with an invigorating mineral and succulent plum interplay, with fruitcake swirled with sharper breadcrust suggestions. A beautifully rustic, expressively malty version with immeasurable depth and refinement.

well crafted zwickl. Color is darkish brown with thin beige head. Aroma is nuts, coffee and toast. Taste has nice snappy bitterness with roast grains. Mouthfeel for weight is right, and nice stinging aftertaste. As pointed out in other reviews, this is filtered, but still very drinkable and very enjoyable.

bottle, best by July 2013. clear and brilliant chestnut brown body with a frothy and full off-white head. though apparently filtered, there’s ample yeast character in the nose, providing a doughy softness to the honey and sweet toasted bread German malt (though slightly apple-like early on, it seems to breathe away into more of an enjoyable baked apple pie situation). so there is some soft bounce to present the vanilla / toffee / honey malt sweetness, creamy and soft carbonation, a moderate fruit and citrus acid Hallertauer character, and a lingering vanilla coffee cake and cookie batter malt succulence.

50cl bottle maruhn - Interestingly unbalanced, almost ale-like Zwickl. malt creamy, caramel, piny hop bitterness, some acidity in the aroma. Lingering earthy bitterness, pretty dry as well. Nice but too unbalanced for sessioning and a tad too unspectacular to seek out.

Test vom 29.10.2009, Gebinde: Glasflasche Noten: 10,9,10,9,9,9 - 9,25

Postupně sem budu doplňopvat piva, co jsem vypil a zapsal si, chvilku to asi bude trvat a proto k těm dříve vypitým pivům nebudou žádné "dojmy"

Bottle found at local Dursty and shared with MichaelBruch. Tasteof rich malt, grains and young autumn leaves. Nice bitterness, gentle sweet. Okay-like but nothing "special" at all.

Bottle shared with McTapps. Just a mediocre beer which tried to score with some malt in the aroma. But it was not malty and not sweet enough to get the points. Alright beer and drinkable at all - but nothing special.

Dark amber colour, clear, slightly tanned large head which soon went but lacing was retained. Grassy aroma, notes of malt, rasin and slight hint of hop. Tasted some caramel and malt, the finish was long and roasted. Smooth texture, medium body, slight carbonation. Overall when it says Altfrankisch it means it is a fairly dark Kellerbier, not unlike other beers that had this written on them.
