2.4 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 8/20
Head is initially large, frothy, off-white, mostly lasting.
Body is light amber.
Aroma is lightly malty (grain, husks), lightly hoppy (herbs), with light notes of DMS and dish rag, hint of airplane glue.
Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly bitter.
Finish is lightly sweet, moderately bitter, slightly unclean, slightly husky.
Medium body, velvety texture, lively carbonation.
Quite sloppy and fairly dirty...not much in the nose and what’s there is not attractive at all. Dirty and husky aftertaste too...ugh. It’s kind of funny, actually...I visited the brewpub with a friend back in 2011, and after sitting down for a few minutes, the sight and smell of the place turned us off enough to leave without trying anything. A year later, another trusted friend said not to worry, I didn’t miss anything...the beers suck even fresh from draught. So this time I thought it would be worthwhile to at least try one bottle (best before August, sampled in May) of their highest-rated beer. I must confess I do not see the mass appeal of this brewery. Oh well.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bottle, best by Nov. 2014, purchased and consumed at the brewery in August 2014: Burnished golden. Broken but creamy, pasty, fine-bubbled foam. Pleasant aroma of fennel seed Spalt, fallen leaves, uncured hay, cookie. Lightly metallic, with a hint of ripe fruity esters. Soft and tight carbonation. Woody and herbal punch of Spalt hits the palate with an oil-rich bitterness as lemony acids sizzle beneath. Dry breadcrusty malt notes exude cleanly. Candyish lager yeast bite melds nicely with the ongoing hop-driven herbality. Plenty of rustic allure here with breadcrust, leaf decay and woody notes arising in unison. Fairly estery as well, with a vibrant kiss of peach backing the lemony hops. Finishes sweetly malty and toasty with breadcrust along with pronounced yeast and lush haylike pils-derived underpinnings. Generally am not a fan of this brewery, so was surprised to find this in good condition and noticeably more enjoyable than their kellerbier. Mouthfeel is nice and soft and the malt pretty clean and full. Good balance, too. Aroma doesn’t reveal a whole lot to my nose, but I enjoyed my glass and will gladly take this over the rest of the beers in their portfolio.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
From bottle at Wagner-Brau Merkendorf. Dated best by November 2014.
Orange body with faint haze and a tall and lasting white head.
Medium body, semi-sweet with medium bitterness. Somewhat hoppy in the mouth with orange-apricot fruitiness, malt provides honey malt sweetness with a toasted grain / bready character that is present more in the finish than the aroma. Festbier strength with a light dose of yeast. Aroma is a little dull, and the malt has some roughness. Not an outstanding beer as the rating average would suggest, but bottled kellerbier is typically dull.

3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
Flasche. - Rotgold. Antrunk karamelmalzig-herb. Geht so.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 16/20
On tap at the brewery. Hazy golden amber colour lasting off white head. Malty aroma. Nutty malty in mouth. No real hop but some residual sting on the finish. Actually the hop builds. It’s an unfiltered something. It’s a hoppy kellerbier I guess. Tasty malty unfiltered and frankly bloody lovely. Beer of the day so far. Hops hops and unfiltered softness. Niw that is what I came to Franconia for. Stunning and you won’t get this quality of beer anywhere else in Germany or the world. Very good

2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
