Editor’s note: IBU increased from 60 to 74 and ABV went from 6.6 to 6.2 (late 2013)

Smells nice, little citrus and some caramel. Kinda soft carbonation though, and the mouthfeel is a little watery. Nice hint of some toasted malt though. Darker than I expected. Not bad.

Maker: BrauKunstKeller, Michelstadt, Germany *** Beer: Laguna IPA (bottled, unfiltered, 330ml) *** Style: India Pale Ale (IPA) *** ALC.VOL.: 6.1% *** "This IPA boasts an inviting aroma of pinewood and citrus with a hint of malty sweetness. Our master brewers have created a beer that’s on the dry side, letting the forest-y and citrus-y hops shine through." [brewery note, my translation] *** Colour: Amber, slightly hazy, Medium off white head. *** Nose: Grapefruit, strong pinewood, some slightly sweetish tropical notes. *** Texture: Medium body, a wee bit oily. *** Taste: At first an interesting balance between very bitter pine and some sweetish tropical fruit and raisins. Herbs, medicinal notes. Towards the middle the sweetishness wears off a bit, a wee note of raisins remains set against resinous pine and herbs. More resin bitterness in the finish, citrus again, hoppy notes. Much the same in the very bitter, lasting aftertaste. *** Impressions: Impressive, multi-level IPA with strong pinewood, thus closer to an APA. Intriguing sweetish dried fruit/alcoholic counterpoint may not be desirable for everyone. No a session beer, but a characterful one. Thumbs up!

Draught. Pale yellow, white head. The beer had heavy green apple and some malt in aroma and in taste. Hops almost unnoticable. High bitterness, medium body. Very likely weak batch of this beer.

Bottle from Getränkepartner Bierzwerg. Pours clear dark golden with a big creamy white head. Aroma of tropical fruits, herbal and honey malts. Taste is good dry bitter, loaded with tropical fruits and citrus. High carbonated, dry and tasty IPA.
