When in Cologne, there are two Kölsch that you have to try. This one, and any of the interchangeable others. This is one of the few Kölsch examples that can really be called "wiess" - local dialect for the old way of brewing, unfiltered and unpasteurized.
This beer is an opaque golden yellow, like a child’s coloring book would depict beer. Served in a 0.2L kölsh glass for freshness and temperature. Traditional bready aroma and flavor are dominant, and we don’t seem to lose the clarity of flavor that is the trademark of the style. This is broader on the palate than most kölsch, with a slightly sweeter taste and less of a bittering after-kick. The metallic flavors of other kölsch are nowhere to be found here. Instead this beer is remarkably smooth.
After drinking "normal" kölsch, this is aa refreshing change that helps you understand how the style became so popular!

Bottle from Bine and Vine: Created a thick fluffy white pillow of foam head which eventually retreated while a golden liquid that showed a white tint similar to witbier. Aroma is subtle with mild notes of quality malts that gives of a smell of grains and hay. The drink is isn’t as boring as most other kolsch styles are and actually has a bolder flavor of the grain and tastes of sweet corn cereals. Okay stuff but it might have tasted better on a really warm day.

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
Mild bready aroma, pours a hazy light straw with just a thin white head. Light crisp flavor, with a very light body. Easy drinking and not much going on, missing the light fruit notes of most Kolschs that I’ve had. This is a nice easy drinking beer, there’s just not much going on.

Pours a slightly hazy straw gold with a fine frothy white head. Big aroma of pils malt, tart, grainy. flavor follows, tart from the pils, medium bitterness, grassy, very bread, well done but not necessarily very Kolsch-like. Low esters, sparkling carb, nice unfiltered ale that doesn’t seem to have the secondary lagered smoothness.

500ml Frigeist Ottekolong bottling. First good reason I’ve had to use the crystal Kölsch glasses my Mom bought me for Christmas.... cheers!
Pours a very pretty cloudy blonde with a nice big fluffy white head and great lacing on the glass.
The aroma is very inviting, lemony, very bready, some mineral character, a good light dose of herbal hoppiness.... some hay.
The flavor is spot on for what I like in this style. Clean, but very crisp... not restrained on bitterness or herbal hop character... some light bready maltiness but by no means is there any abundance of sweetness here. Just a little bit of that "straw" character, but it’s not as central to this one as many interpretations of the style. Certainly not unlike a great German PIls... but fitting more towards the Kölsch style.
Wow this is right up my alley. I really didn’t expect it to be this good.

Bottle @ home picked up at Mile High Denver. Pours a bit milky, very hazy yellow orange appearance with a small white head. Very spicy herbal hoppy, light barnyard, straw, grainy aroma. A bit tangy, light lemon fruity, chewy straw, grainy cereal malty, a bit spicy yeasty, fairly herbal flavor. Not top notch in my book but fun as fuck to try.
