Beers of Germany (The Craft Beer Social - PA Chapter #1) Social - Aroma - floral and light hops were the presence on the nose Appearance - body was yellow, liquid cloudy, white head about 1" and faded to a ring. Taste - the taste was very clean, with a mild sweetness and with subdued hops Palate - body is light, texture is thin, the carbonation is average, the finish is light and crisp

pours hazy almost cloudy yellow with a very nice white head, good retention and lacing. floral and lightly skunky notes, cereals-plenty - wheat, oat-like features and other pale tasty grains, lemony, herbal-grassy hops, also woodsy - touch of vanilla and spices, slightly cakey. moderate carbonation, light body - oily and quite thick, dry herbal-grassy-citrusy finish. aside unfortunate skunk volatiles, this is the tastiest kölsch i’ve had.. very nice and easy-going.

Half-litre bottle as Freigeist Ottekolong. Pours yellow, white head. Nose is straw, huge orange, grass, no sulphur. Flavour is really crackery, that German crackery malt blends nicely with the grassy hops. Pils-like. Lovely!

500mL bottle, pours a cloudy orange with a fairly large white head. Aroma is very grainy, with cereal malts and light grassy hops - very restrained on the nose. Flavour brings out lots of full cereal grains, some wheat, and dry grassy hops. One of the fullest and most pleasant flavoured kolschs I’ve had. Highly drinkable, thirst-quenching, and dry on the finish from the hops. Great stuff.

500 ml bottle labelled as Freigeist Ottekolong. Pours a clear light gold with moderate head. Light aromas of limes and bread. Flavors of grains/cereal, citrus, and cardboard. Very unoffensive and easy to drink but the style tends towards the industrial.

Lasting white frothy head atop a lightly carbonated gold body. Light grainy aroma. Good cereal flavour and light body. Very enjoyable.

Jacksonville, Fl - Grassroots Market - 500 ml bottle - labeled as Freitgeist Ottekolong. Pours a murky medium orange, light off-white head, decent lacing. Aroma has a hint of cake mix, some yeasty notes - a touch of corn. Flavor is fringing on the edge of bland with a hint of faint honey, some yeasty notes, some buttery accents - some honey shines through in the finish to redeem it a tad. Passable.

330ml bottle. Pours a cloudy medium straw, with a white head. Malty, quite spicy aroma, citrus, bread, minerally yeast notes, not very complex but nice nevertheless, maybe a tiny hint of sulphur? Dry, medium bodied, mid bitterness, creamy CO2. Malty, spicy, yeasty taste, caramel, citrus, bread, earth. Straightforward, much more interesting than the mainstream Kölsch offerings. Quaffable.

UPDATED: DEC 10, 2013 200 ml draft @ Braustelle. It is hazy! & clearly unfiltered, looking absolutely nothing like the other Kölsch’s I tried in Cologne. It also sports a smaller creamy white head. Nose is full of hops, raw onion & barnyard hops, slightly zesty, lots of fresh hops, freshly made it seems, lovely. It is almost IPA-like. Taste is pretty hoppy (& extremely so compared with everything else I tried within the style), bitter grass, onion, barnyard, tad milky, raw herbs, lighter sweet malt underneath, fruity, it is not brutal or anything, very easy to drink. Distinctly nothing else like all the other Kölsch’s, a completely unique take & break from tradition just like everything else at Braustelle. Body is creamy & way fuller than other examples of the style. Great stuff, interesting take on style, seems like a mix of modern influences and what Kölsch probably was 100+ years ago before they started changing it to compete with pils / lager.
