11.2 bottle, got it in a sampler with 5 other brews. Pours a dark brown with hints of copper on the edges with a nice off-white head that leaves good lacing and a froth atop the beer. The smell is right on for the style with notes of caramel, slight chocolate, pils malt and a pinch of hops. The taste is richer and bolder than most schwartzbiers which isn’t necessarily a good thing, but it is decent here. It has a large smokiness to it along with some bittersweet chocolate. There’s not much hops in the flavor. The mouthfeel is watery which doesn’t help this flavor. The high drinkability that is usually present in this style is altered a bit by the mouthfeel. I’ll go with Koestritzer over this anytime but this is cheaper. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 02-28-2010 21:50:04

Grima (1891) - Saarburg, Rhineland-Palatinate, GERMANY - JAN 23, 2011
Pitch black with a slight reddish tinge. Smells sweet malty, a minimally roasted note comes through. Starts malty sweet, subtly roasty. Pleasantly bitter coffee-like aftertaste.

This stuff pours a nice black color. The head is small but does leave some nice patches of lace. Nose is mild roast and sweet raisin malt. There is a pleasant drinkable quality to this beer and a nice maltiness as well. Slightly sweet but w/ just enough carbonation to cut through, this is a rather well put together beer. The bottle I am drinking right now does not justify a super high score but I am putting this on my list of things to try in Germany to see what it’s like perfectly fresh.

12oz bottle. Deep brown-red color, with big, foamy, beige head. Eastern Euro pungent caramel chocolate aroma, with some milky chocolate tones as well. Straightforward and enjoyable enough. Doughy, watery mouthfeel. No bittering balance to speak of, true to style I suppose. Smooth, malty chocolate finish. A interesting beer to try, not exactly world class.

11.2 oz bottle 3/7/10 (Binny’s-Downers Grove) 43° in Lager glass. Pours medium to dark brown with a decent beige head. Aroma of roasted malt, caramel, coffee, and slight chocolate. Taste of chocolate, roasted malt, and slight coffee. This medium bodied brew is well balanced and quite tasty for this style.

Bottle. Pours a dark, brown-red with a foamy beige head. Nose of bread and lightly toasted malts. Flavor is mild blend of chocolate, caramel and some fruit. Some earthy character. Light to medium in body and well carbonated. Finish is sweet, roasty and a bit metallic.

Bottled. A deep red beer with a thin lazing tan head. The aroma has notes of caramel, bread, and malt. The flavor is sweet notes of caramel, bread, and malt, as well as light notes of metal, leading to a dry lightly metallic finish. Thanks yespr for sharing.
