4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Draft sample at FOBAB 2013. Pours a deep but clear amber with a small off-white head. Hits all the notes advertised: vanilla, toasted brown sugar, oak, and bourbon warmth layered atop chocolate, chiles, and cherries. Some earthy undertones. Doesnít overdo any element, though. Medium-bodied, with a mildly spicy, more so sweet mouthfeel. Moderate carbonation. This one medaled. I donít mind.

3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
On tap at Breakside. Pours a dark copper color with a medium white head. A sweet sugary nose with vanilla and cocoa. The flavor is dominated by super sweet massive cocoa powder, very dry, some heat (from chillies and alcohol), wood, tequila (for some reason), light green pepper. Interesting, good.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Draft at the source. Hazy purple maroon color, thick creamy head with great retention and solid lacing. Aroma of cocoa powder, very subtle pepper, vanilla. Taste has vanilla, Mexican mole sauce, whiskey. Wow.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
22 oz. bottle thanks to Kate. Pours out a hazy amber topped with a small white head. Aroma is bourbon, green chillis and a little spice. Taste is bourbon, caramel, vanilla, chocolate and a little of the chilli. I was expectiog way more of the chillis to match the nose.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle:   Coppery amber, moderate sudsy off-white head, sparce lacing.   Huge chili pepper on the nose.   Slight pepper on the tongue, moreso Bourbon.   Shows heat on the nose, but it doesnít really show up all that strong.   Also noticing cocoa on the tongue.   Does have a little touch of heat on the exit.   Slight cinnamon.   Noticing the bourbon on the tongue, but not on the nose.   Very warming.   Body and mouthfeel are moderate.   Lingering bourbon, soft chili pepper, even softer cinnamon and cocoa.   Very different, and enjoyable.   Somewhat of an oddball, but it works!   Thanks Chris!

3.2 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 13/20
Better than their regular Aztec. Rather like a good bourbon, alcohol burn and chile burn are gone. Flavour has cherry and malt notes with vanilla finish.

3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle, acquired via trade -- thanks, Aaron! Pours beautiful clear red-amber with some white head and great lacing.
Aroma: whoa spicy pepper; bourbon; some chocolate, some vanilla. Donít know what to expect from the taste on this. Interesting for sure. Chalky, bark, cinnamon.
Taste: Sweet bourbon, with muted cocoa that comes through quietly but persistently in the finish. Not as spicy as nose would suggest, not at all. Some heat there, but not much (just the faintest hint at the end). Definite bourbon on tongue. A bit of cinnamon there too. Sweet, but not overly so. Plenty of bourbon.
Palate: medium body, slick texture, prickly carbonation.
Overall: still have no idea what to make of this, honestly. Interesting and tasty for sure. Brews like this are the reason American strong ale exists as a category. I liked this quite a bit, but am not sure how i would describe it to anybody else, nor when Iíd really crave this. I could see how this would be polarizing.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
22 oz. bottle, pours a hazy amber with a small white head. Aroma brings out loads of bourbon, followed by chillis and a little cinnamon. Flavour brings out shitloads of bourbon upfront, followed by caramel, some residual sugars, and only a small hint of chilli spice. The bourbon has taken this over, drowning out the spiciness. There is some notes of chocolate and vanilla in there too. Great stuff.
