Andrew Horne joins us as a brewer and cellarman from Colorado, where he worked at Avery Brewing and Oskar Blues. This is his first recipe for Breakside, an English Special Bitter made with an eye toward balance and clean malt flavors.

On tap at breakside Portland. Pours out a burnt orange topped with a small head. Nose is lots of bread malts some wood and grain. Taste is more of the grain bread malts and some fruity sweetness.

On tap @ the brewery, RBSG. Golden amber, bready caramel, lightly fruity. Papery finish.

On tap @ Breakside. Nice orange/amber pour with a white head. There’s kind of an overwhelming estery quality to this. Big time apple, pear, and golden raisin. There’s some honey and crusty bread to it, too. Light bitterness of grassy hops and tea leaves. Same sweet fruit and malt flavors as I get on the nose. Maybe a bit of caramel as well.

On tap at the brewery. Pours a clear orange copper with small off white head leaving sticky lacing. The aroma is toasted grain and wet biscuit. Medium mouth, bready malt, light grain, good.

Draught at Breakside Restaurant & Pub Brewery. Sweet light caramel nose with a touch of pasture and manure. Hazy light copper. Night light hopping and moderate caramelly flavors. Thin-medium body. Thin but a pleasant West Coast sort of bitter.

At the Milwaukie taproom, a bit mild and a bit high in alcohol for what I think of as an ESB. Not much punch to this one.

Another one of those beers that can fall into two categories. The brewery calls it a bitter, and it definitely has bitter characteristics. Light hoppiness in the malt body. Amber colour with a thin white head. Light malty aroma,. Doesn’t stand up to spicy foods, but would be good with fish and chips or bangers and mashed aardapels
