COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We always wanted to make a year-round German-style Pilsner. Both because it tastes great and it’s a favorite of ours. We import bagged German Pilsner malt and manually add 3,300 pounds to each batch because we believe that’s what it takes to make a great German pilsner. We source all Hallertau Hersbrucker hops, which we prize for their mix of floral and “Noble” notes. Then we wait. This beer is unfiltered, so we rely on natural lagering techniques (i.e. long times and cold temperatures) to get this beer as bright as sunshine.

Draught at Hales Ales Brewery and Pub, Seattle
as Breakside Liquid Sunshine Pilsner, 5.3% ABV

Hazy pale blond color with creamy head. Aroma of straws. Dry mouthfeel; some flavor of corn; ordinary bitterness, a bit lemony, with a hint of grass, but without a clear Hallertau hops evidence.
Not what promised.

Rich gold, abundant herbal hops on the nose, the palate having some brighter citrus hops (all hersbrucker, though, apparently). There seems like maybe some of the heavier malt/hop dynamic of a pilsner that contrasts with this dynamic. So it’s nice, but also a bit odd.

Bomber from Made in Oregon. Pours translucent lemon/gold with a foamy white head. Aroma of fruit and mild earth/spice. Med body. Flavor is fruity/lemon with earth/spice. It’s pretty flavorful. Hops tend to hide the breadiness very well. Although it finishes less than dry, it works well. Oh so much tastier than the Mittel Europa pils. Well, maybe PU excepted. :)

Nice gold pour with a bright white head. Clean and quite tasty for the style. Lemons, grass, light notes of dried hay. Tasty.

651mL from Whole Foods Bend, OR. Pours a clear straw. Thick, sheets of lacing. Nose is heavier biscuit is thick marmalade, chamomile, clover honey, freshly cut grass. bright tangerine/grapefruit. Taste is dry, hoppy, grassy, thicker honey and biscuit balance. Longer grassy hop finish with thicker honey and biscuit malt to balance. Seems like a solid MrChopin and 3fourths style pilsner that gets the thumbs up from a big pilsner lover.

Bottle. Clear pale straw body with a short white head. Sweet-smelling rice cake and corn syrup and potato starch malt aroma with heavy vitamin chalkiness and some light German hops (lemon and spice). Light body with yogurt and starchy saltine cracker yeast / malt play. Growing bitterness across the middle. Plastic wrap and marshmallow puff finish. Neutral-flavored hops with relatively high bitterness compared to the lean body. Fizzy carbonation with starchy rice hull and grain husks and a distinct nutri-sweet finish. The hops are at least German; the malt is coarse and the carbonation fizzy. Another throw-away beer. See Heater Allen for how to do this style right.

On tap at the Alibi Room, pours a hazy golden with a small white head. Nose brings out grassy hops, grains, and biscuity malt. Flavour is similar, with really nice grassy hops, biscuity malt and grains. Very grassy, fairly hoppy and dry, with very high drinkability. Great stuff.

Head is initially small, frothy, white, mostly lasting. Body is clear light yellow. Aroma is lightly malty (toasted grain), lightly to moderately hoppy (flowers). Flavor is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Light to medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation. A clean, serviceable north German rendition, a la Bitburger....very light and delicate. It falls a bit short on character and charm, but it has no flaws and the nose is attractive.
