A smokey amber ale designed in collaboration with Chef John Gorham of Toro Bravo, this beer is intended to pair with his restaurant’s spicy, rich, and layered tapas menu. For additional resonance between the beer and John’s food, we used a touch of Espelette pepper in the brew kettle.

On draught at Breakside 2/16 for Zwickelmania 2013. Red amber in color. Full-bodied taste with a smokey, peppery spice to it. Surprisingly easy-drinking.

Bomber. Honestly smells sweet and caramelly with a tiny singe of pepper and vegetable. Flavors up front are almost appleish with sweet malts that blend right into a light but known pepper singe in the finish. Not as spicy as me and me girlie were hoping for, but still a decent brew.

22 Oz bottle pour. Pours a thick copper color with a ton of head and lace. Spicy pepper and malt aroma. Really thick, creamy body with rich malt and hints of spicy peppers. Really good. Enjoyed this.

Really excited about this. One of the best restaurants in town collaborating here. Amber/red with a good off-white head. A dry, lightly smoky aroma with hints of cocoa and wood and a light toffee sweetness. It is remarkably complex with heavy vanilla and caramel then crisp but very light bitterness, smoked paprika and a little heat in the belly. This is maybe the best chilli beer I’ve ever had. I think it’s savory/sweet balance is the perfect way to do it.

Poured from a 22. Has the color of a red. The aroma doesn’t preclude an overly spicy beer. The flavor has a slight pepper profile over the hops and malt...each taste yields a bit more pepper flavor. I like the pepper beers!

22 oz bottle. Aroma: malty, with hints of vegetables, pepper, and caramel. Taste/Palate: sweet and crisp; finishes slightly bitter and astringent. Meh.

From a large shared bottle. Light but distinct pepper notes in both the aroma and flavor. Complex and moderately hoppy for style. Should work well with many foods, as intended.

Draught at Alibi Room, Vancouver
Amber color, clean, with compact head. It’s a very common Amber Ale, with some caramel and malt flavor, off-dry in the front and slightly mellower in the final; ordinary bitterness. The pepper provides a mild kick in the final but not the aromatic qualities of Espelette. There are better ideas for an Amber, this one is rather boring, I wouldn’t drink a full glass of it.

Lasting white thin head atop a clear copper body. Nose is lightly smoked and cantaloupe. Very melon flavoured and some ashtray. Very interesting.

650 ml bottle., Porus a dark copper with moderate head. Aromas of toasted malts, dry caramel, light raisins and a bit of cereal. Flavors of bready malts and light spicy pepper. Pretty simple but nice.

Draft - Caramel malts. Hazy copper with a nice beige head. Caramel, orange, spice and a bit of heat in the throat. Unusual and not in a great way.
