COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
A smokey amber ale designed in collaboration with Chef John Gorham of Toro Bravo, this beer is intended to pair with his restaurant’s spicy, rich, and layered tapas menu. For additional resonance between the beer and John’s food, we used a touch of Espelette pepper in the brew kettle.

On draught at Breakside 2/16 for Zwickelmania 2013. Red amber in color. Full-bodied taste with a smokey, peppery spice to it. Surprisingly easy-drinking.

650ml bottle pours amber in color with 2 fingers of white head that leaves some decent lacing on the glass. Aroma is smoky with some caramel and grass and hints of pepper. Taste is smoky with the pepper, a caramel malty sweetness and a grassy hop bitterness. Light to medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Overall, a nice touch with the peppers and smoke. Tasty and recommended.

From a bomber. Pours clear amber with substantial head. Aroma is mild to non existant. Drinks light with not much of a finish. Has slight build of the chili bit mot much. Needs something more.

Bottle at home watching the cavs game. Pours clear dark golden, off white head. Not a ton going on in the nose. Mild vegetable notes. Some warming heat eventually but kind of bland in general ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Pours deep amber with a finger of off-white head. Caramel malt and smoky, peppery goodness. Quite complex and not overly spicy.

Bottle. Head is initially average sized, frothy/creamy, off-white, mostly lasting. Body is medium amber. Aroma is lightly to moderately malty (caramel, toasted grain), lightly hoppy (apricot), with notes of butter, frosting, vegetables/chiles. Flavor is moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly bitter. Finish is lightly to moderately sweet, lightly acidic, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, lively carbonation, lightly alcoholic, lightly to moderately burning. Not a lot happening in the nose, seemingly some diacetyl though, and as with most chile beers I really don’t understand why you’d want a vegetal note in beer, it just makes it smell off, akin to DMS. The flavor balance errs on the sweet side but as expected it’s somewhat burning in the aftertaste, which they may have intended to try to help balance the sugars. Overall kind of unpleasant and clunky.

Lagerboy (1878) - British Columbia, CANADA - MAY 6, 2015
Bomber. Clear orange copper, creamy fine off-white foam settles and lasts. Lightly spiced toasted caramel malt aroma. Taste is lightly sweet lean caramel malt and not much else, no hops, no heat. Average carbonation, thin bodied, low hopped. Disappointing. LBW (Lagerboys Be Wary)

Nocturne (1731) - Cheshire, ENGLAND - APR 19, 2015
Tap at Bakushu Club Popeye, Tokyo. Reddish orange shade. Short head. Piney hops throughout. Did not know that this was brewed with peppers and found the heat strange. Now that I know, I can say that their attempt was successful, but that it doesn’t make for a great beer. Intriguing but not for me.
