This is a very pleasant beer. I had the 33 oz. bottle. The head wasn’t too impressive but seemed to have two stages. It has a juniper-ish aroma, and a sweet, malty taste with a warm (alc.?), long finish. The hops are in the background, but still quite noticeable.

Reddish mahogany in color with some haze and cream-colored head. Aromas of caramel, dark fruit, and apple pie spice. Medium-full bodied, with enough carbonation to balance. Sweet with malt and caramel, fruit and spice. Good bitter balance to cut the sweetness. Reminds me of caramel apple-raisin pie. Much better than I was expecting.

12 oz bottle: Pours amber brown with a nice white head, small CO2 bubbles. Aroma of caramel malts, and light citrus hops. Taste is salty and slightly bitter on the finish, fizzy. Nice toasted malt flavor with a rich pine and citrus hop balance. No mentionable spice for an Xmas Ale which is nice. good warming with 7.4% but not real alchohol taste. I would get this again next year.

As far as Christmas Ales go, it is not that special. I am a dark beer fan and prefer Christmas Ales where the added spices come into play.

December 18th, 2011 - Amongst the hordes of Christmas beers clamoring for the attention of a thirst beery drinker, I am happy to say that Breckenridge’s Christmas Ale belongs to that stratum that remains distinguished and in memory. It clambers out from that inky soup of other winter warmers who find equal footing in their flavor profiles, and are so desperate to distinguish one from the other. Breckenridge’s rift (the more tragic for what it could be, considering that it grew up near a ski site) begins with a dark, closer-to-colorless brown, almost like a brown gray color, and the head is ashen, but bubbly and unafraid to tickle the drinker’s nose. Hops and lingonberry offer a blend of bitterness and tartness. Cranberry and strawberry appear as flashes in the olfactory, appearing here and then there, and give this brew a bouquet worth holding off the drinking for. A mild tart and a bit of acidity complement the darker malt flavors in the taste too, where low notes uf umami and parmesan couple with a general but bland dubbel yeastiness. Not quite as engaging as a good Belgian dubbed, this American Strong Ale is a nice departure from everything else that tastes like a maltier version of a brown ale. Yet another reason to have a glass full of Christmas cheer!

12oz bottle. Pours a cloudy amber brown color with a thin, ivory head that falls to a ring. Aroma is of caramelly malt, spices, and some nutty yeast flavor. Taste has caramel, cloves, cinnamon, with a hint of coriander and pecans, finishing with a touch of a bittering hops. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy with moderate carbonation.
