JB175 (1654), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA Jun 13, 2007 Dark brown with a light head. Aroma is sweet and roasty with some chocolate and coffee detectable. Taste is a bit chocolatey, a bit roasty, and a bit coffee-ey, but not all that balanced. OK, but sub-par for a stout. lb4lb (2011), Austin, Texas, USA Jun 10, 2007 Nice rich coffee roastiness, with a hearty malty body, but I’m not able to taste any strong oatmeal presence. Fair amount of bitterness, and some burnt tastes. I liked the amount of carbonation, which was noticeably more than that of a Guinness or Boddington’s, and the thickness was good. Could use a touch of sweetness, I think, to balance out the taste. Overall, it wasn’t bad, but not quite what I was hoping for. b33r (363), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Jun 3, 2007 Draught at 69 Taps in Akron. Aroma was weak. Flavor was light and also fairly weak, not very sweet and just a little creamy- reminded me of Guinness. jpm30 (1588), East Central, Georgia, USA Jun 1, 2007 From a 12 oz. bottle with an unnotched bottling date along the left side of label, sampled just above cellar temperature in a pint glass.
Poured a blackish dark coffee brown with a creamy, bubbly tan head that dissipates into a thin sudsy lacing, minimal amount of sticking.
Roasted malty nose, coffee and chocolate, a light charcoal and a subtle fruitiness.
Proper moderate carbonation and a soft malty crisp, slick, not quite chewy, creamy smooth medium-full bodied mouthfeel, more medium than full bodied.
A smooth, easy drinker, pleasant tasting, roasted coffee and milk chocolate, a mild lactic acidity, burnt chocolate and charcoal flavors start to emerge at end, giving this a malty bitterness, there is a little sweet caramel in the finish as well, the finish is a dryish malty bitter.
Not bad, one of the few beers from Breckenridge that I actually like.
Bockyhorsey (2487), Mesa, Arizona, USA Jun 1, 2007 12 oz bottle. Tucked away in back of fridge since Feb. Aroma of oatmeal and coffee stand out. Black body with tan head and some lacing left on glass. Flavor was mostly all roasted coffee and left a coffee aftertaste on palate. Easy drinkable stout without the sweetness more dy than anything else. Good beer. BDR (2139), Roseville, Minnesota, USA May 29, 2007 Very dark brown with no head. Faint caramel nose. Oatmeal and dark malt flavors. cheapdark (2011), Monacatootha, Pennsylvania, USA May 27, 2007
12 oz brown bottle for $1.50 from Vintage Estates. Very little aroma, probably due to my slightly stuffy nose. The pour is exceptionally black and dark. Has an orangey tinge around the edges. Taste is a bit bitter, it has that burned feeling on the back of your throat. Except for the bitterness, kinda smooth. Cannot taste much if any chocolate in there and the black coffee roastiness is quite overwhelming. Should this be a mild impy stout? Comes across like one. I think Weyerbacher’s Old Heathen is less oppressive than this. Does not live up to the sweet stout impression that I got from Mackeson’s xxx. However, much better than Bell’s Cherry Stout.
madcow75 (425), Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, USA May 22, 2007 Bottle. Pours black with a bubbly light brown head. Chocolate and oat aroma. Taste is roasted bitter espresso, chocolate, smoke. Nice bitter hop bite in the finish, with a little fruitiness. Medium to heavy body, a little chalky.
