mybrainhurts (212), North Dakota, USA Jun 12, 2005 Dark, almost black pour. Fairly stout like aroma. Roasted malts, a hint of chocolate. Burnt, slightly bitter finish. A bit porter like in body. I guess if I had to drink breck this would be it. henry3r (586), Wichita, Kansas, USA Jun 12, 2005 The bottle poured a BLACK beverage covered by an ample creamy tan head that didn’t last very long but left nice lacing on the glass. The aroma was a complex mixture of chocolate, caramel and espresso coffee. The body was light with a creamy texture and average carbonation. The flavor started off with semi-sweet chocolate and coffee and settled to a middle of slightly bitter coffee. The finish was long, bitter and dry. Eyedrinkale (3209), Astoria, New York, USA Jun 12, 2005 22 oz bottle. Very black with a small but thick tan head. Aroma is vanilla and chocolate with some roastiness. Taste is nicely hopped but I’m not diggin’ the hops here. Lot’s of chocolate but not much oatmeal. Funky stuff for sure. Pailhead (2572), Allen Park, Michigan, USA May 11, 2005 Bottle: Aroma of roasted grains, coffee, and very light chocolate. Pours a dark brown, virtually black, with a small off-white head. Okay lacing. Light chocolate up front with a big roasted coffee and hop finish. There is a light metallic flavor in the background, which is a first for me in a stout. A little thin for a stout. beermatrix (1497), Twin Cities, Minnesota, USA May 8, 2005
Nice dark fudgy brown nearly black body with a softly sponged head of light tan foam sitting atop. Has a moderate lacing with broken sheeting and dotting.
Mellow set back aroma of cocoa and partial oaty sweetness.
Flavors are clean, milding, and unobtrusively set within a very light bitter chocolate array bringing a bit of coffee notation in the finish. Mere hints to oats or barley waver in and out mostly in the front and middle. Submerged only behind its quickness is a slight tang of oaty sweetness. Finish is where the bittering coffee takes an upward turn and helps keep it from being completely hollow.
Feel is a light-medium body with a somewhat milky creamyness until the finish where it turns quite roastified and bittered with coffee acsents. Which is the only thing worthy of its overall character. Could be richer, could be fuller, but seems to fit with what the flavors are doing.
Drinks down easy enough but lacks some truer Oatmeal Stout qualities I like too see in the style. Vac (2389), San Diego, California, USA May 6, 2005 Pours with a black body topped by a medium thick head with some lacing. The aroma is roasty with bitter notes, a little sweetness and slight mocha notes. The flavor is slightly sweet and roasty with a slight mocha note, some bitter notes and a touch of cigarette ash. Full bodied and smooth. biz82 (1328), austin, Texas, USA May 4, 2005 Dark brown with a creamy tan head. Aroma of coffee, leather, toffee, cocoa, some ash. Light in body for the style with a metallic and oxidized finish and some harsh bitterness. Decent burnt and caramel flavors. ericmc83 (200), Arkansas, USA Apr 16, 2005 Updated: Apr 18, 2005Pours black. Average sized dark brown head. Chocolate malt aroma...maybe some sweet and a tiny hint of grain coming through. Flavor mimics the aroma. Coffee/chocolate malt, a little sweet, and maybe a tiny hint of grain. Not as sweet as some other sweet stouts, i.e. Mackeson XXX, but in my opinion that is a plus. Medium body, but, unfortunately, a little bit of a watery texture. Medium bitter finish that stays at the back of the tongue for a bit. Overall it’s pretty good in my opinion. I will get this again when this 6 pack is gone.
