Transparent but it’s like that smoked glass that you use to view solar eclipses. Pretty good head retention, khaki head, good bottlecap, dicey label. Initial distinct spike of smoked almond flavor, tilted a bit on the acid side, then generally has a tapering coffee profile on towards the finish. Session body, but a silky finish which clings a bit. This is a very good, but not great, stout. This would be a great base to experiment from, however - if it had a bit of cherry it’d be a good Black Forest. It’s definitely a good deal at $6.49/6. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Jun 20, 2001 Nice toasted malt nose, hint of chocolate, little froth, but some hint of hops at the somewhat sweet and dry finish. A ’Beginner’s’ Stout. Quite drinkable when your not in the mood for a heavy stout. ChainGangGuy (2619), Kennesaw, Georgia, USA
| 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | Aug 21, 2007 Appearance: Pours a black body with a bubbly, ivory-colored head.
Smell: Aroma of chocolate, roasted malts, and dusty dry oats.
Taste: That’s not at all what I was hoping for! No, but seriously, I was expecting much more sweetness from this brew. Taste is mainly roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate, and later a bit of smoke. A bit of caramel sweetness can be coaxed out as it warms. Finish is dry, with a fair amount of roastiness, smoke, and only the very faintest floral hoppiness.
Mouthfeel: Medium-bodied. Fairly smooth mouthfeel. Medium carbonation.
Drinkability: Though not exactly what I was hoping, it’s still a pretty solid beer. Pailhead (2610), Allen Park, Michigan, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 13/20 | May 11, 2005 Bottle: Aroma of roasted grains, coffee, and very light chocolate. Pours a dark brown, virtually black, with a small off-white head. Okay lacing. Light chocolate up front with a big roasted coffee and hop finish. There is a light metallic flavor in the background, which is a first for me in a stout. A little thin for a stout. Bockyhorsey (2561), Mesa, Arizona, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Jun 1, 2007 12 oz bottle. Tucked away in back of fridge since Feb. Aroma of oatmeal and coffee stand out. Black body with tan head and some lacing left on glass. Flavor was mostly all roasted coffee and left a coffee aftertaste on palate. Easy drinkable stout without the sweetness more dy than anything else. Good beer. dwyerpg (2553), Las Vegas, Nevada, USA

| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Mar 20, 2004 A solid stout, for sure. Not sure why this is only in the 55 pecentile at the time of my rating - this is well above average. Woody nose, jet black color, low scumy head. Smooth dark roast malt body with a graininess (oatmeal?) in the middle. Espresso-bitter finish - dry and even tangy. Wanted the body to be a little thicker, but overall a fine stout. kramer (2531), Sunbury, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 6/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 27, 2006 12 oz bottle, via Secret Santa PhillyBeer2112. Pours a clear black colored body with some mahogany edges under a creamy dark brown head. Aroma is mostly burnt and roasted malts. Some hints of chocolate, chalk, and oats. Flavor is burnt malt up front with some charcoal astringency on the finish. Some bitter chocolate and chalk as well. Mouthfeel is fairly thin with moderate fine carbonation. Dry and astringent on the finish. This wasn’t bad, but I didn’t get much oat character out of it in the flavor or the body, it was fairly enjoyable though.
