jhumphries69 (717), Tyrone, Georgia, USA Oct 4, 2007 Updated: Oct 12, 2007 12 oz. bottle. Pours a deep, opaque onyx with a very thick, dense, velvety head that lasts a long time and leaves lace on the glass like jaguar spots. The aroma is bold with dark roasted grains, chocolate cookie (like an Oreo w/out the creamy center), and sweet barley malt. There is also an earthy, herbal character from the hops - albeit mild. The flavor starts bittersweet like semi-sweet chocolate chips. The taste reminds me of of Oreos dipped in cold, bitter coffee. Hints of hops emerge towards the back of the tongue - just enough to provide balance to this semi-sweet, roasty brew. The finish is dry with a lingering slight sweetness. The mouthfeel is a touch over-carbonated, but otherwise elegantly thick - not syrupy. The luscious oiliness of oatmeal is pretty evident in the beer’s full body. Overall, a pretty decent oatmeal stout.
Cavie (1317), Fort Worth, Texas, USA Nov 8, 2009 Very dark black pour. Smells of roasted malts, some coffee and bitter chocolate. Taste is dark chocolate and drying bitter. Good all through. Fratto (670), Arlington, Texas, USA Nov 8, 2009 Bottle thanks to Cavie. Pours a dark black with a medium brown head. Aroma is grains, caramel, and a lot of coffee. Taste is similar, but disappointingly weak after the smell. Creamy feel and a pleasant aftertaste. dagimp (107), Philly, Pennsylvania, USA Nov 5, 2009 From a 12oz bottle into a pint glass. Pours extremely dark with about a finger of head which dissipates within a couple minutes leaving minimal lacing. Smell is of coffee malts. Taste is coffee and to a very small extent, chocolate. Unfortunately, there’s a cloying sour undertone to the taste. The mouthfeel is also a little too thin for an oatmeal stout. Overall, a good beer, but there are many more high quality oatmeal stouts that I would go for before this one. gringo332 (236), Richardson, Texas, USA Oct 31, 2009 good, smooth tasting beer. smell hints of coffee and taste of dark chocolate, which stay on the tongue. Heathen (723), Riverside, New Jersey, USA Oct 23, 2009 THOUGHTS: Finally my first Breckenridge rating. Surprised this doesn’t get higher marks. I don’t know if it was because I was drinking this from a Samuel Smith glass or what, but it reminded me of a "Lite" version of Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout. I’m not saying it was incredible, but it is a nice, easy to drink, full flavored and quite sessionable beer.
TECHNICAL: Bottle. Poured a dark brown, that was nearly black with red highlights and a large, tan, head that kept a decent sheet and left fair lacing. The aroma was moderate to heavy cereal, roasted, burnt, chocolate, strong coffee and oat malts. The initial flavor was sweet, lightly bitter and acidic; while the finish was lightly sweet, rather bitter and a little acidic with and average duration. There was chocolate syrup, bitter chocolate, roasted malt, oats, coffee, a little cherry, coffee bitterness and burnt malts. The medium to full body was creamy, or better yet, silky, but a little sticky on the lips with lightly fizzy carbonation and chalky and lightly stringent finish. jb (1024), Rochester, New York, USA Oct 18, 2009 Very dark, had a hard time seeing the highlight color. Thin tan head, nice lacing. Heavy roasted notes in the nose, full mellow palate of coffee, roasted malt. A bit hoppy, a bit oily, average, but for an oatmeal stout that means it is not bad. douglas88 (1556), Salt Lake City, Utah, USA Sep 24, 2009 On tap at the Ale House. Pours a dark brown color with a large nitro head. The taste and aroma are full of rich grains, toasted chocolates, milky coffee, very smooth and nice. They said that this was the same beer as the Thunder Stout. A nice brew. joergen (8429), Frederiksberg, Denmark Sep 20, 2009 Bottle at Stockholm Beer and Whisky 2009.
