3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 14/20
I hate it when a beer tastes totally different between tap and bottle and thatís the case with Breckenridge Vanilla Porter. I had this on tap and it was delicious so I picked up a bottle at my beer store and it was only good. Perhaps I got an old bottle (there is absolutely no freshness date whatsoever), so all I can do is review what I have in front of me: a tasty, by-the-book porter with a vanilla twist in the end.
I poured a 12oz bottle into a Irish stout glass.
Appearance: Cream soda complexion of brown and ruby red. Seemingly opaque, but translucent with visible carbonation in the light. Forms a large, dark tan, frothy head which retains and laces extremely well.
Smell: Standard porter aroma of dark malts, a touch of honey or some kind of confectionery sweetness. Mild, though.
Taste: I had this beer on tap and it was as robust as many imperial stouts, but when I tried the home version it was quite different. Itís a porter in pretty much every aspect. Mild, toasted dark malt through the palate with sweetness in the background the entire time. Minute taste of dark fruits, but nothing not found in most other porters. The finish is what gives the beer its uniqueness with a burst of vanilla flavor and a quick kiss of bitter dark chocolate. These candy flavors linger momentarily, but then the palate fades away cleanly. I enjoyed what was there but I wanted a lot more.
Drinkability: I was shocked to discover this beer is only 4.7% ABV since it seemed like a much bigger brew on tap. This makes Breckenridge Vanilla Porter an anomaly of a brew since itís a tad too big to be a classically defined "session beer," but I think itís one you can bend the rules for. The body isnít too thin, the mouthfeel is comfortable, and thereís no cloying sweetness or dryness whatsoever. Itís a good alternative to the usual boring porter.

Aroma is more subtle than expected. It is pleasant but missing some of the dark grain characteristics. It is a nice dark cola color with a small tan head that leaves uneven lacing. The vanilla was not as pronounced as expected but it is there. The rest of the taste is a little thin. Overall still enjoyable enough to recommend to people that might be wary of darker beers.

Bottle from Breeze Thru. Pours brownish with a bit of a tan head. Aroma has vanilla and malty caramel with cocoa powder. A sweet cookie. Taste is of sweet vanilla, nuts, chocolate, caramel ... and more vanilla. Medium bodied and quite sweet. Probably thin for a porter. Finishes sweetly long, with lingering sweetness. Donít remember this being SO sweet.

3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
When I was traveling in Colorado a few months ago I came across this at a liquor store in Grand Junction. It has a dark brown pour with a small head. The vanilla is quite subtle, but it is enough of a presence to recognize it. It is a better than average porter with a slight vanilla flavor, but I wouldnít go out of my way to get it again.

Couldnít find a bottle or best by date.
pours a brown ale with some etching on the surface and when I give a good shake and theres additional bubbling. Up front artificial grape and then the vanilla kinda comes through, but I feel like it is a real stretch. Iím getting the feeling there is something wrong with this bottle. Flavor is vanilla with some nice cocoa and some toasted grains, but nothing particularly special for a vanilla porter. Medium bodied with moderate carb and a dry finish. It is okay.
