Rich spiritous cask wood, cakey almond, sherry, toffee, mocca and single malt snout. On paper exactly the sort of malt-heavy richness that ordinarily turns me right off, in fact. But here it just works. Background chocolate and hopleaf interest to keep me guzzling. Alcohol right at the front, unfolding into choclolate creaminess, nuts, milky Rauch notes, berry fruit and currant. The usual applepeely BC tones. Chestnut and ivory with intricate lace. Slightly out of date bottle, and none the worse for it.

From the Bottle at Tom’s Ultimate Glasgow Tasting, Blackfriars 01/12/2007 Some fruit and malt aromas. Amber coloured fruity and a little rich on the palate. Crisp and slightly bitter finish.

Bottle (in NZ), light brown colour which is a littly hazy (not surprising as gthe neck is caked with sediment) and no head. Coffee is the most dominant aroma, but there is a little chocolate in there too, a touch bready and some stewed fruit. A touch tart, though I will put this down to the travel. The palate is a touch thin, the hops come through a lot stronger than in the aroma, with a definite raisin flavour. Interestingly, the malt doesn’t really come through at all, though the finish is a little roasty. I’ve given this the benefit of the doubt on a few counts.

50cl. bottle: Pours a nice orangey chestnut with pretty creamy beige head. Coffee, toffee, and chocolate balanced nicely with hops, raisin, dark rum, and dried leaves. Smells a bit darker than it looks. On the tongue there is some nice toasted brown bread (think thick sliced heavy Irish brown bread) with a sprinkling of cocoa powder. Then hops come in to break up the toast a little. Some fruit follows. Possibly raisin and just a slight tough of something citrus. Roast comes back in and lasts through the finish with mild coffee. Also a touch of cookie dough adds some sweetness in the final seconds, but still ending dry. Quite nice

Pours a hazy dark brown/burgundy color with a big white head that leaves a small film. Aroma is deep, intense and malty. It shows notes of tobbacco, chocolate, truffles, watered down coffee, banana and bailey’s whiskey cream. Flavor is bittersweet with notes of chocolate, truffles, burnt caramenl, hazelnuts and mokka. Wow I liked it a lot.... This one doesn’t need complexity. Smooth silky texture, medium body. Carbonation is medium too. Finish is long, sweet and the aftertaste is chocolatey. A nice beer to sit and enjoy.

Bottle at ultimate glasgow tasting. Aroma is roasted malts, grassy bitterness, lightly dusty yeast. Taste is similar too bitter for the yeast to work though.
