Bottle from Rehills, Newcastle. A cloudy brown beer with tropical fruit and malty flavours, red fruity notes and a slight nutty and citrus finish. Is this a ‘Brown IPA’?!

On tap at Brew by Numbers, pours an opaque dark amber with a medium beige head. Aroma brings out dry fruits and dry bready malts. Flavour brings out boiled vegetables, bready malt and dry toffee. Good stuff for a brown ale.

Keg at the brewery. Murky chestnut brown coloured pour with a greenish cream lasting head. Aroma is veg hop leaf and light nuts and light caramel. Some earthy twigs in the nose as well. Flavour I’d composed of caramel light roast and earthy citrus. Some chalk and mineral water character. Palate has a medium body with a crisp mineral finish. Some tart berry.

Nose is light roastings, cocoa powder, earthy hop presence, dark berry fruit, light spice, biscuit. Taste comprises toffee, light roast, biscuit malt, subtle sweetness, ligh pine, earthy cocoa. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close. Decent enough hoppy brown.
