Ungstrup (23957) - Oamaru, NEW ZEALAND - NOV 28, 2010
Draft. An almost opaque dark red-brown beer with a lazing brown head. The aroma has strong notes of roasted malt lending it a bit of acidity, combined with a note of chocolate. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, chocolate, and roasted malt, leading to a dry roasted finish.

On tap. Pours black and opaque with a creamy light brown head. Hard roasted malt in the nose. Quite full-bodied, very hard roasted malt - almost coffee notes - but also an underlying sweetness. Very burned malt finish. 100709

From tap at the brewpub. Pours dark brown to black with a small tan head. Smooth dark and roasted malt aroma, vague breadish note. Sweet dark toffee malt flavoured. Light sweet and hardroasted malt finish. Roasted, light ashtray and mild bitter flavoured finish.

Bottled (thanks Stoutlover72!). Pitch black colour, minor brown head. Aroma of coffee, licorace, caramel malts and some roast. Flavour is hoppy, acidic, salt watery and roast kicking in in the aftertaste. Very unbalanced flavour. The aroma was just lovely, but whatever happened to the flavour...

Bottled. Opaque black, not much head - just some dark brown foam. Strong roasted, burnt coffee beans and tar in the nose. Very roasted, unbalanced, harsh - tar mixed with vegetables and cigarettes. Roasted aftertaste. No good.

(12oz bottle, thanks CaptainCougar) Small brown head atop black body with brown edges. Aroma is medium sweet, roast, some smoke/tar, dark chocolate. Taste is moderately sweet, dark chocolate, milk chocolate, some smoke, light alcohol. Sticky full body, some alcohol burn.

12 oz. bottle from the brewpub. Aroma is smooth dark malt and coffee. Opaque brown/black color with no head. Medium body or thinner with very mild carbonation. It’s a bit oily. Starts with dark malt, rather sweet, then turns to rather darkly toasted malt. Finish is quite smooth, but with burnt coffee flavor. Other than being too thin, it fits the style. Based on other reviews consistency may be a problem, but I seem to have had a fortunate bottle.

Lubiere (6988) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - MAR 31, 2006
Bottle was bought in August 2005, at Bevmo Sacramento. Dark opaque black with a nice thin moka head. Lightly raisinous malt aroma, with lactic notes, light chocolate. In mouth, sourish coffee malt, with roasted coffee notes. Some alcohol warmth, but mainly hidden by sourness. This did not age well!

CaptainCougar (6834) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - OCT 4, 2009
Bottle thanks to bhensonb sampled on 7/26/09: Pours an opaque black with dark mahogany edges and a small ring of light tan bubbles. Sweet smoky dark caramel malty nose has a touch of tobacco and dark fruits. Starts with good fullness and sticky dark caramel and chocolate flavor before a drier roasty dark chocolate finish. A decent imperial stout with some smoky roasty complexity.
