4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20 TAR (2236) - Lafayette, Colorado, USA - JAN 24, 2004
Rich ebony with bronzed-ruby shimmers at the edges. Creamy, semi-rocky caramel foam. Bottle-conditioned. Soft aroma of buttered chocolate and caramel surrounded with rich smoke wafts. Ravishing java, coconut, shoe polish, and ink interplay touched with charcoal, dark chocolate, vanilla, crackery malts, and muffled dark fruity esters. Soft and flowing on the tongue. Gentle carbonation. Mix of bittersweet chocolate and oxidized black malt flavors with sporadic earthy hops teases. Takes on a flavorsome coarse, grainy note from the copious amount of black malts. Hints of vanilla and ink deepen the malts. Malts are borderline acrid, which lends a bit of dryness to offset the sweetness and bring out the vanilla flavors. Finishes elegantly with seared malts and lightly toasted pale malts crowned with rich dark chocolate and juicy, earthy hops. Hats off to these guys. This is a beauty. Big thanks to Mitch!

Dark brown, almost black, thin tan foamy ring. The nose is roasty and sweet, lots of coffee, and some dark fruit. Starts sweet with dark fruit, moves into some roast and coffee, and finshes earthy and dry with a good lingering hop bitterness as well. I enjoyed this one.
3.8 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 bb (4888) - Alamo, California, USA - JUL 12, 2004
Bottle. Dark beer with no head. Aroma of brown sugar, molasses, stone fruit, caramel... Very rich and thick. Flavor of roasted malt with some bitterness to back it up, but mostly it’s a bit fruity to go with the good backing - stone fruits, figs, coffee. There’s some alcohol warming of course, but it’s very complimentary. A nice one.
3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20 CaptainCougar (6834) - Columbia, Maryland, USA - OCT 4, 2009
Bottle thanks to bhensonb sampled on 7/26/09: Pours an opaque black with dark mahogany edges and a small ring of light tan bubbles. Sweet smoky dark caramel malty nose has a touch of tobacco and dark fruits. Starts with good fullness and sticky dark caramel and chocolate flavor before a drier roasty dark chocolate finish. A decent imperial stout with some smoky roasty complexity.

Draft. An almost opaque dark red-brown beer with a lazing brown head. The aroma has strong notes of roasted malt lending it a bit of acidity, combined with a note of chocolate. The flavor is sweet with notes of malt, chocolate, and roasted malt, leading to a dry roasted finish.
